Lions cornerback Darius Slay has been involved in trade rumors, but it’s starting to sound like Slay might stay in Detroit. The Lions have set an extremely high asking price for the 28-year-old, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears, and that might be a barrier to a deal getting done.

The Eagles were said to be “working hard” on a Slay trade this week, which makes sense given their failed pursuit of Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey. However, as Garafolo notes, the Eagles were only willing to go so far for Ramsey, who is much younger than Slay. Alas, Detroit’s price might be too high, even for Eagles GM Howie Roseman, who has a serious tolerance for risk and an affinity for major trades.
Slay, a two-time Pro Bowler, notched eight interceptions in 2016. He hasn’t matched that unreal level of production since, but he still rates as one of the better available cornerback options as the deadline draws near. On the flipside: He ranks as Pro Football Focus’ No. 52 cornerback this year, a far cry from Pro Bowl level play.
For his part, Slay would probably welcome a fresh start. Or, at least, that’s what he said in the immediate wake of the Quandre Diggs deal that shipped his friend to the Seahawks.
The Lions extended Slay in 2016 with a four-year, $50.2MM deal. He’s got one more full year on that pact, with a $10MM base salary coming to him in 2020.
Anymore then a second and a player is to much they can keep him. His play has declined.
Now grab Mike Evans from Tampa and Vic Beasley from Atlanta or Derek Wolf from Denver
If you think Mike Evans is really available you’re out of you mind. It would take at least two firsts. I don’t see Evans going anywhere.
He’s been playing with a hamstring injury all year..don’t let that pro football grade fool you.
plus the fact that everyone in that secondary is covering for like 40 seconds per play because they can’t get to the quarterback
Classic losing syndrome in effect. 28 year old good to great CB is now being shopped. If you really want to build a winner, the cornerstone pieces are QB, LT, blitzer & CB. So why ship out a good, young piece of the puzzle? Oh, I forgot, he was drafted by the last HC and therefore not a ‘good fit’ with the current HC.
You have it quite wrong actually. Cornerstones are in the following order of importance….QB, OL, OL, OL, OL, OL. The guys closest to the ball are the most important. The rest grow on trees and can be found easily once that is understood.
Can easily been found? That’s why Detroit has been searching for a corner opposite of slay the past 5 years. tabor, awesome second round selection. We had to pay a nickel corner 30 something million to even come here. Soo to say corners are easy to come by is just a joke. Need to keep slay and give him an extension if we want to compete for the division next few years.
Trade Slay while he still has some value. I agree, if you don’t have a solid offensive line to protect the QB and run the ball; and someone to apply pressure to the QB you will never be competitive. How about making a meaningful trade for a change? Trent Williams, Melvin Gordon or Vic Beasley? Lions can’t draft good offensive tackles (Decker), durable effective running backs (Johnson) or pass rushers than can remain healthy (Ziggy), so be bold instead of picking up retreads off the waiver wire.
if the GM is asking for a first rounder I don’t see it happening..maybe a second in 2020 and a third in 2021..new rumor being floated is the Jets are shopping bell and the Lions were contacted..
