The Cowboys are not planning to determine future Dak Prescott salaries around certain games in the first half of one of his seasons. While the Cowboys have lost their past two games, after Prescott September dominance, Jerry Jones insists this small sample size will not factor into the fourth-year quarterback’s deal.
“Let me get that real clear. It’s not impacting that with me at all,” Jones said of Prescott’s early-season work. “But I do see Dak showing the ability to handle adversity and basically go out and make the kind of plays that win important games for the Cowboys in the future. I see that.”
Through five games, Prescott leads the NFL in Total QBR (80.6). This comes after the former fourth-round pick finished in the top five of this metric twice in his first three seasons. Prescott threw three interceptions in Sunday’s loss to the Packers, which came after a 10-point Cowboys outing in New Orleans. But the Dallas passer has submitted 56 games of work for the Cowboys to judge.
It’s safe to say the organization views Prescott as a long-term passer, so a deal in the Jared Goff–Carson Wentz neighborhood ($32-$33MM per year) likely will continue to be where these talks lead. While this process may not produce a resolution soon, as Prescott appears comfortable with his standing to keep playing on a fourth-round contract, Jones is not holding two losses against his quarterback from a big-picture standpoint.
“Well, first of all, the narrative about his financial (outlook) as opposed to how he’s playing (in 2019) is laughable. It’s just not that way,” Jones said. “It’s too much on both ends of that for both ends of the team and for Dak to equate his performance, stats, or won-loss these first two or three games.”
Kirk Cousins – 28 M clearly a mistake. Alex Smith 23.5 M mistake. Flacco 22.1 M mistake. Foles 22 M mistake. Keenum 18M mistake. Tyrod 15M mistake. Bortles 18M Mistake. Bradford 18 M mistake. Glennon 15 M mistake.
Goff 33.5 M jury still out. Jimmy G 27.5 M jury still out.
Take the average of all these guys. 21.8 M, franchise tag is 24.865, which the Cowboys should only offer as the average value for a 4 or 5 year deal.
To be fair to Alex Smith, he got hurt when the Redskins had a winning record…but fair point
And Foles and Bradford.
I think you are missing a few examples. Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, and Rivers to rattle of a handful. Is Dak on Drew Brees’ level? No. But Case Keenum? Mike Glennon? If you want to talk contracts you have to find actual comparable players not just scrubs desperate quarterback needy teams “overpaid”. The fact is they are not easy to find and it’s incredibly rare to win a Super Bowl without one. Although he’s not Brees he was good enough to give Jerry Jones no choice but to sit Romo for Dak. He has numbers to support a deal in the neighborhood of Goff or Jimmy G he’s proven as much or more. He’s also likely to progress rather than regress at his age and being only his fourth year in the league. The Cowboys options are to pay the man a contract up there with the top of the league, franchise and see him go the Cousins route and sign with another team after two years of it(believe me someone will pay him), or you can trade Dak and get out the dice and give them a roll in the draft again. Outside of the draft he cannot be replaced no other team(with the exception of the Pats with Brady) have an extra qb they will let go or trade to you that is on Daks level(that’s assuming Jimmy G is). You can not like these contracts and obviously there have been some bad ones but Dak is better than those scrubs you mentioned and he’s the Cowboys guy it’s just that simple
Gotta say I agree
He’s been coasting behind one of the best offensive lines in the league.
Oh, and his running back
is kind of good.
He’s no Johnny Unitas!
Actually, the running back is the totally overrated one. Elliott disappears against good teams and the Boys run game is very inconsistent. Advanced stats show running Elliott actually lowers the chance to score and that all the scoring is based on Dak passing.
Glad you aren’t my agent.
QB salaries are out of control. In part because the refs have protected them so much (esp Brady).
The league brass too…..
“But I do see Dak showing the ability to handle adversity and basically go out and make the kind of plays that win important games for the Cowboys in the future. I see that.”????? Jerrah needs a trip to the optometrist! When does this guy “go out” and make BIG PLAYS in BIG GAMES? NYG, WASH, MIA, not big games. GB/NO were BG GAMES! I’ve been a Cowboy Fan my whole life and watch every game. I personally haven’t seen a game in the last 2 seasons that I can honestly say “Wow Dak really put the team in his back today….” The NYG game week 17 last season doesn’t count because the Giants were already in Cancun.
I couldn’t agree with Z-A more. $25M should be the ceiling for this guy.
All I can say is good luck finding his replacement. Maybe you get lucky(like you did drafting Dak in the fourth). I’m not a Cowboys fan and admit I haven’t seen as much as you have but the numbers and comparable contracts support a contract north of that. Dak isn’t signing for 25 that’s just not happening I think he’s made that obvious. So what’s the alternative? Spend draft capital on a quarterback in hopes he can replace Dak? Those are picks that could be used to bolster your current chances of winning now and quarterbacks while being the most important are the hardest to evaluate. Goff doesn’t carry the Rams but he got his money. I think that’s a fair comparable and if Dak doesn’t get it from Dallas he’s going the Cousins route and cashing in big time elsewhere likely leaving a big fat gaping whole behind center in Dallas. Might as well trade Cooper and Elliot and tear it down and start over if that happens. The Cowboys aren’t bad enough to draft high enough to get even a top three rated an out of college they’d have to get another diamond in the rough. Keep in mind every year the cap rises and new deals reset the market raising the bar. I think you have to think about the alternative and how bleak it is
You must have missed the Seattle playoff game.
In the playoff game vs. Seattle last season he was 22-33 226yrds 1TD 1 INT. Another example of Dak just driving the bus, not putting the team in his back. Check Elliott’s numbers.
Amazing how all the pro sports journalist and talk show host was all over Dak early in the season when they were playing nobodies. Now it is all quiet on the Dallas front as he has not performed against quality opponent’s. He is worth at least what half of those guys are making the QB market right now is just so out of whack it is how for the average fan to fathom.
If Jerras lips are moving,
he’s lying.
Or at least free associating…..
As not a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, I hope they overpay him to a long term deal, regret it, and are cap strapped.
