Jalen Ramsey wants out. The Jaguars, meanwhile, don’t necessarily want to let him go.
The Jags’ star cornerback has been frustrated for some time – he’s been openly campaigning for a top-of-the-market extension, but the Jaguars have been mostly unwilling to have serious talks with him. Then, this season, he had a major blowup with head coach Doug Marrone.
On the field, Ramsey is upset that he has been utilized in zone coverage, even though he ranks as one of the league’s best man-to-man defenders. Off the field, he wants to secure the bag, though he no longer wants that bag to come from the willing hands of owner Shad Khan.
With that in mind, the Jaguars seem to be following the old axiom of “Don’t tell them no. Tell ’em how much it’ll cost.” The asking price was initially set at two first-round picks for Ramsey. Now, it has advanced to two first-round picks, plus more. The Jaguars did secure an offer of two first-round picks, but they declined, because the offer came from a contending club that is likely to pick near the backend of the draft.
Reportedly, it will take an “astronomical” offer for the Jags to part with him, but that could just be an attempt by the Jaguars to improve their leverage. Meanwhile, roughly every other team in the NFL has at least some interest, but they’re scared off by the draft capital required since acquiring Ramsey would also mean giving him a fat contract.
Of course, a first-round pick from, say, the Patriots, does not carry the same value as a first-round pick from, say, the Dolphins. But – we want to know: if you were an NFL GM, would you be willing to cough up two first-round picks for Ramsey, with the knowledge that you would also have to give him an extension north of $75MM?

Two first rounders assuming it’s a top tier team. Between 24-32. A rebuilding team, two first round picks are too much.
Agreed. It’s all about where the acquiring team is. For a win now contending team with likely lower picks, he’s definitely it.
Only game changers are worth two first round picks and Ramsey is not a game changer!
I mean laremy tunsil certainly wasn’t worth 2 first round picks, despite the Texans being that desperate for protection for Watson. So it only makes sense that Ramsey gets as much, bc he is a top 10 player in the league that’s still young. I get that left tackle is like the second most important position after QB, but cmon. Jags are doing the right thing in the long run, for their franchise.
Yes. And no link

The jags are being too picky and it’ll come back to bite them.
For a player that requested a trade? No. Jags are in over their head. Lol if they really turned down 2 1sts
Perhaps a higher picking team could offer a first and a third if they were for some reason interested. Would you rather pick in the high 20s-32 in consecutive drafts, or pick top 10 in one and have another high third in the following draft?
Maybe even make the third a conditional second if certain criteria were met such as Ramsey signing a long term deal and making the pro bowl in year one or the team makes the playoffs or something.
Pro Bowl is not a good litmus test. All Pro.
And if you are that top level team would you want to have to wait until 58+ to pick two years in a row for a guy that quit on his team and will also ask a kings ransom to be motivated to play again? No thank you!
Sorry my post was not clear. I was insinuating that a “higher” picking team (meaning a top 10 pick) could offer a first and third/conditional second.
no.
I agree with what the Jags are doing here. I see it as a 2021 1st round pick is the equivalent of a 2020 2nd round pick in trade value. So if you make the playoffs this season, your next 2 first round picks are the equivalent of a pick between the 13th and the 20th in the upcoming draft (depending on how far you go in the playoffs). How can anyone fault Jacksonville, for wanting more than that for 2-3 years of control of a rare shutdown corner. Ramsey is under contract this season and next, and can be franchised for 2021.
Despite the belief a pick is offset by a round each year that’s just ridiculous. A 1st round pick is a 1st round pick.
That is how the draft value chart works (link to calculatorsoup.com). A first round pick 2021 isn’t the same as a first round pick in 2020. With that said, a teams preference between a 2 in 2020 and a 1 in 2021 will vary depending on a number of factors. How deep is the upcoming draft? Did the team sending us the picks just win the Super Bowl or did they have a top 5 pick? How do we think that team will do in 2020, aka where do we think they will be drafting in 2021? A contending team offering 2 first round picks is not as good as a single 2020 first round pick from the the Dolphins, Bengals, Redskins, etc.
Thanks Jeff, still ridiculous. Only fluctuation is the obvious of deep or lean drafts, but too many people seem to think just a delay of drafting one year makes a pick worth one round less and that’s just flawed thinking.
Do the Chiefs win the Super Bowl this year and Patrick Mahomes break his leg the next year and you get a Top-5 pick? Getting stuck on What Ifs… never do anything and then you’ve missed your chance to do anything.
no

I say yes but at least one has to be a conditional pick. Like the jaguars only get it if he puts up double digit picks, or he makes a pro bowl.
The asking price remains high yet he sits out with phantoms injuries. Either he’s hurt and therefore a risky acquisition or he’s not and then he’s just a bad teammate, either way not worth 2 #1s and a ridiculous contract.
Yes If you’re the: Chiefs, Pats, Rams, Eagles, Seahawks, Saints, Packers, Bears or Cowboys.
Toss up if you’re the 49ers, Ravens, Browns or Bills
No for everyone else
No if you’re the Eagles.
Yes if you’re the Eagles….Eagles picks 15 or later since 2000-F.Mitchell,L.Sheppard,J.McDougle,S.Andrews,M.Patterson,J.Maclin,D.Watkins,M.Smith,N.Agholor,and A.Dillard….With the exception of Dillard, because he’s still an unknown, none of those players are worth a franchise tag.Ramsey is a true shutdown corner.
So because some of those picks didn’t turn out that great for the previous regimes somehow devalues not one but two 1st round picks going forward? OK! And some of those guys you listed had serviceable careers.
5 100 yard receiving games in 4 weeks.Eagles are a championship contender, not a team building to get into the playoffs.A shutdown corner could also help the pass rush, since it could allow Schwartz to blitz more beyond the front 4.Their pass defense is currently 1 of the worst in the league,it could literally destroy any hope of another championship.
Also gotta keep in mind that right now they could have 10 picks next year, with compensatory picks. And their free agent list next offseason could end up also netting them a handful of picks in 2021.Giving up the 2 1st wouldn’t leave them in that bad of a position to add through the draft.Especially with most of the key positions on the roster already being filled.
He’s hurt, he doesn’t fit their defensive scheme and picking 58+ at best two years in a row for the right to then wrap up so much money in one player is not good.
You say he don’t fit the scheme because you think our defense is zone, but you’re wrong. The corners play man,the safeties and linebackers play zone.Thats why we were watching D.Adams beat Maddox over and over again until Adams got hurt.If he don’t get hurt,we might be 1-3 instead of 2-2.
Absolutely not. Why? Because this clown could pull the same stunt(s) with whoever he lands with. His actions are have painted him as someone who cannot be trusted to show up from one week to the next – sort of like, you know who…
Exactly. Plus right now he’s been suffering through one serious injury after the next to keep him out of the lineup.
He wanted a new contract, and they wouldn’t open up those talks until he asked for a trade.I assume you’re comparing him to A.Brown, who actually got paid and still acted out. He’s more comparable to Elliot.1 of the top players at his position,on his rookie contract, and he’s trying to avoid being stuck there for another 4 years beyond this one.Its Jacksonville, not Pittsburgh. Its Tom Coughlin, not Bill Belichick.
This is really more of a problem with the cba, with 1st Rd picks being tied to a 4 year deal with an option, and the team being able to tag the player 3 times beyond that.Teams are avoiding giving out the big extension, with the plan of going year to year,in a physical sport that already limits guarantees.
What is actually happening is players on rookie deals are starting to push for more money with multiple years of control remaining on their existing deals. Teams are not used to doing business that way, hence the issues with Ramsey and Elliot. After this season, Ramsey would have 1 season remaining on his contract. It is then that Jaguars would have begun negotiations as standard practice.
And players are making sure they don’t get the Kirk Cousins treatment. And with Ramsey, the problem is as much with the team,as it is with money.Owner has already said he would be willing to make him the highest paid at his position, and he still wants out.If he don’t take this stance now,he’s still controlled by Jacksonville for 4 years after this one, with no guarantees beyond the option.
If he would allow the franchise tag 3x yes. 5 yrs 75ish
With his recent history of behavior why would anyone believe that Ramsey will suddenly be a team player just because he is paid and on a contending team. Teams that stay contending will get more value out of the cost controlled talent they will pick with those first round picks. Only very desperate teams would pay what Jax is asking.
+1
He’s simply not worth two first round picks because not only do you have to give up those draft choices, but you’re also going to have to pay him.
For a contending team, it might make sense to offer a 1st and a 3rd round pick for him. I’d do no more. If I’m not a contender, I go nowhere near this.
Not to mention him playing games with phantom injuries works against him as teams are leery and don’t want to sink so much into somebody that is either really injured or just a bad teammate making up injuries and sitting out games leaving his team hanging out to dry.
