The Cardinals have reached agreement on a trade to acquire Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. In the deal, the Dolphins will acquire a conditional sixth-round pick in 2020 that can become a fifth-rounder.
Drake will help to reinforce a Cardinals RB group that badly needs the support. Star David Johnson is expected to miss this week’s game due to an ankle injury and Chase Edmonds, a key fill-in, suffered a hamstring injury of his own over the weekend. Drake now figures to see significant work against the 49ers on Thursday night.
Drake gives the Cardinals a clear boost in the near term, but he does not necessarily give them a building block for 2020 and beyond. He’ll be a free agent after the season, so they’ll have some work to do if Drake impresses in the second half of the season. For the here and now: the Cardinals seem to believe in their roster and like their chances of climbing out of a 3-4-1 hole.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, seem to be keeping their eyes on the prize – a top draft pick in 2020. With no hope of contending this year, they’ve bolstered their draft capital and unloaded a player who was unlikely to suit up again in Miami.
Drake did not travel with the Dolphins for tonight’s game against the Steelers, a move that foretold a Drake deal. The Lions and Titans were linked to Drake, but the Cardinals seem to have wanted him more.
Miami’s bottom-tier offensive line has struggled this season, and Drake is averaging a career-low 3.7 yards per carry. However, the former third-round pick posted 4.8- and 4.5-yard YPC averages in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Drake, 25, has not rushed for 50 yards in a game this season, but he surpassed 1,000 yards from scrimmage in a part-time role last year and has just 333 career carries under his belt.
Who would want to play for a franchise run like this?
Your starting RB for a conditional 2020 pick?
Tanking is the worst thing a sports organization can do (imo)
They already proved that they cannot identify high end talent. Trading a 2nd for Rosen and then bench him is a bad sign of their evaluations.
One trade confirms their bad evaluators? Lol. C’mon, super scout. When you think about it, it makes sense to take a shot at a QB that many believed to be one of the top QBs in the draft at the cost of a 2nd round pick. It’s not always about hitting on every single pick/trade. Scarcity plays a huge role in how these moves are made. The upside of finding a franchise caliber QB is worth the risk of moving a 2nd round draft pick. Maybe it’s you that should re-evaluate your evaluation process?
They’re
Sick burn!
While I agree that they’re tanking, this isn’t an example of that. Bad teams don’t need running backs much like how bad baseball teams don’t need great closers. Drake is more of a third down back than an every down runner, and they’ve been using Mark Walton as their lead running back for the most part lately anyway.
The Browns got a 4th that can become a 3rd for Duke Johnson (who’s better and under contract for longer), so a 6th that can become a 5th for a pending free agent that was never really a featured part of their offense is a reasonable move to me.
Teams weren’t willing to give up a 4th rounder for him. So is it that surprising he went for a conditional 6th? Drake really isn’t that good. He’s the “starter” but he’s a gadget player really.
The Houston Astros disagree.
The Astros utilized Luxury Tax & Pride Sharing better than any other organization across all sports; the difference is their success is the poster child of the intent
Cubs, royals, rays, lots of teams do it.
Miami should be stripped of all its 1st round picks. Tanking is repugnant and shouldn’t be condoned in any sport
I agree
So your gonna take the 1st round picks from the worst team in football. Yeah that’s healthy for the game. We’re obviously gonna ignore the Bengals, Redskins, and Jets, who are also tanking.
I disagree the Jets are tanking. They are just inept and im a Jets fan saying that. If they were tanking would they have spent such big bucks on mosely and bell or try to sign Barr from the vikings? Tanking means you dump talent not overpay.
The dolphins dumped all their decent talent and even future talent. The Rosen trade was just abysmal and everyone knew it. This trade was at the time i think to try and get some heat off them for basically saying that we are not tanking but with the talent left there is no chance we are winning.
Cant speak to the Bengals or the Redskins but in the Redskins defense they basically had no qb and a lot of money tied up with Smith so they were pretty hamstrung.
I disagree with that
I disagree. when u rebuild u trade just about all ur older talent and then u set prices put of this park for the younger talents and if a team wants a player really bad and pays ur price u trade em . then any player that doesn’t want to be there u trade em as they are bad for the rebuild . and then any player in a contract year that has any value u move at the deadline if ur sure u can resign . the dolphins are doing things rights . a team really wanted their T and gave up 2 1st for . then players that didn’t want to be their they traded then the rb they tried to resign he didn’t want to resign so they traded .
this team is not tanking they are building right.
tanking is when u have a bunch of talent n good players and u sit em and put in all ur backups ans roll with them for half or all of the season.
this team tried the rebuild and the retooling and it failed every year for years so this way is a good way to rebuild a proper way when retooling or small rebuild
Melvin Gordon to the lions for a 4th based on this trade.
Only if the chargers send back a 5th…lol
If Melvin signs a multi year deal, chances are that the Chargers would receive a 3rd round compensation pick so that wouldn’t even make sense
Makes sense with an injury prone David Johnson, but I don’t see this helping the cards, because they got more problems than running back
“Star David Johnson”. LOLOLOLOL!!!!
The problem with the Cardinals is the division mates are so far ahead of them that they’re nowhere near close to competing
Running Backs never have a high return due to the overwhelming amount of talent. Drake also hasn’t been utilized very much this year; they’ve been playing Walton and Ballage. I don’t think the players playing for Miami are complaining. They’d be backups or overshadowed on other teams. Preston Williams is Miami’s #1 (undrafted). I wouldn’t be surprised if Parker is traded by tomorrow too. I support the “not tanking” season. If you’re going to rebuild, you need to start from scratch. Rosen is worth the pick they traded. He has shown some talent. Unfortunately, he’s getting killed when on the field and that defeats the purpose of what they are trying to do.
To all the people crying about tanking: Miami has been mostly stuck in purgatory for the last several decades. At least now they’re doing something different
AMEN
Solution is ping pong weighted lottery for all non playoff teams. NHL and NBA figured it out…
Cause that stops people from tanking in the nba? See 76ers.
Nba had to double down to prevent teams from tanking by changing the lottery odds.
Because that makes sense…
Boy, if I’m a talented RB in college, I’d be looking at a position change, because it’s clear that RBs have almost no value in the NFL. Almost none will ever sniff a 2nd contract for any big money, unless it’s a clown organization like the Jets offering one to Lev “2 yds/carry” Bell.
more money at DE LT OG S CB
Love the Drake
