Ken Whisenhunt‘s second stint with the Chargers has come to an end. The team announced tonight that they have fired their offensive coordinator.
“This is not an easy decision and definitely not one that I take lightly,” said head coach Anthony Lynn. “You win as a team, and you lose as a team. It’s never about just one person. At the end of the day, however, I simply felt a change was needed at this time. I want to thank Ken for his years of service to the Chargers organization and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
The Chargers hired Whisenhunt as their offensive coordinator back in 2016. This was the coach’s second stint with the organization, as he previously served as offensive coordinator between his tenures as the Cardinals and Titans head coach. The Chargers offense saw a bit of a renaissance upon Whisenhunt’s hiring, as the team finished fourth in yards during the 2017 campaign and sixth in points during the 2018 campaign.
However, the offense has struggled a bit in 2019, as the team ranks towards the bottom-half of the league in yards (17th), points (23rd), and giveaways (20th). This could partly be attributed to the inconsistent running game, especially following Melvin Gordon‘s return; the Chargers are currently bottom-10 in most rushing categories. The team hasn’t scored more than 20 points since their late-September win over the Dolphins, and they narrowly avoided a four-game losing streak this past weekend.
Cardinals head coach not Falcons*
I mean come on, it can’t be that hard to fact check before they post… right?
Well he did manage to narrow it down to one of the 4 bird teams…lol.
they fixed it lol but I can see why the mistake went down: he was drafted by the Falcons as a TE
Difficult when you have no quality rb and a qb thats over the hill.
And a fan base that’s rooting for the opposing team
Watch the game sunday. It will be a blanket of green in Carson.
Oh Ken, i remember when you spurned my Lions to take another HC gig that you got fired from. It gives me great joy to see you mastering your trade…… of getting fired
Until Rivers gets gone the chargers will never be very good.
Rivers has looked bad this year, but put anyone behind a porous o-line, and they’re going to look pretty bad.
Add to that, the fact Wiz wasn’t using any creativity in the running game nor passing game, and that’s a recipe for losing..
EVEN WITH A BAD O-LINE though, you can still use motion, misdirection, quick screens, quick passes, and clever sequencing to keep the defense from pinning their ears back and teeing off on you…
The 49ers are using a 7th round rookie, and basically a guy that was originally pegged as a PS candidate as their starting two tackles, yet because of Shanahan’s creativity in his play calling, they’ve been running all over people..
Look at what McDaniels does in NE, GB’s new revitalized running game by LaFleur, SCHEMING and play-calling definitely helps make a HUGE DIFFERENCE…
When you are lacking in talent, especially on the o-line, you have to make up for it in your offensive creativity..If not, you’re doomed to fail, it is really just that simple..
You are exactly right but it’s hard to get too creative with Rivers at qb. His ball handling skills are horrible and is the least mobile Qb in football. They couldn’t even run a qb sneak against the Titans which cost them the game.
How about Jay Gruden, heard he needs a job?
He’s a defensive coach
nope..
Go ahead and fire a coach for the front office not doing their job. Not a Wisenhut fan but Gordon holding out and Gordon being stupid isn’t on him.
I sure wouldn’t mind seeing him as the OC in Pittsburgh again. Sure beats what they have now.
The Steelers just beat the mighty Dolphins so why would they be looking for a new OC?
How about speed up/trust rivers to run no huddle. Look at the number of delay of game penalties for past 3 years….ridiculous! Good riddance. Whisen-rut
No kidding on delay of game penalties.
