The Bengals are releasing running back Samaje Perine, according to a source who spoke with PFT’s Mike Florio (on Twitter).
Perine had some buzz as a fourth-round pick in Washington a couple of years back, but has yet to break out as a pro. The Oklahoma product was a key special teams player in Cincinnati, but they’ve decided to move on from him.
Perine managed 603 yards in his rookie season, but averaged just 3.4 yards on his 175 attempts. Then, in 2018, he carried the rock just eight times. With the Bengals, he saw a grand total of five snaps.
The Bengals are 0-6 as they head into this week’s matchup against the Jaguars.
This will answer all of their problems. Imagine being cut by an 0-6 team. That has to sting
I’m shocked at how bad he has been in nfl. I really liked him a lot at OU.
I don’t think he’s bad. I think the team does him no favors.
Perine could never get off the ground with a decent yards per carry in Washington. Same place where AD came in and ran for 1000 yards in his first season.
I like him as a potential fullback with his power.
Which team ? He was below average in Washington as well. Truth is he never got a shot in Cincy. He’s not going to play ahead of Mixon or Bernard. The Bengals biggest problem is offensive line. Walter Payton would look like Perine with this pathetic line.
Constantly hurt in Washington and their line wasn’t good either. He caught 25 of his 28 targets while in Washington and showed ability in the passing game. That year Robert Kelley has 3.1 YPC. No one else hit 100 carries and Thompson who got hurt was the only one to eclipse 4 YPC behind his OL. Behind the current OL Mixon is at 3.4 and Bernard at 2.1 YPC.
Perine is 24 and is frankly too big to be just a third down back. Honestly if a team that runs the ball picked him up, he’d probably look like he has potential again. Not these teams that run it 15 times a game only to stop when they get so far behind.
