Just a few weeks ago, it looked like Dak Prescott was going to sign an extension with the Cowboys very soon. Dallas’ owner Jerry Jones went so far as to call a deal “imminent.” Only a week later we heard that talks had stalled a little bit, and now we have further confirmation of that.
It would be a “huge surprise” if something got done in the near future, a source told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (video link), who reports he’s getting “strong indications” that nothing is close. Fowler has been told that Prescott is “willing to wait this out,” and is in no rush to sign an extension. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com confirms that no extension is expected in the near future. Prescott has been playing the best ball of his career and has all the leverage right now, so that’s not too surprising.
Since Prescott wasn’t a first-round pick like fellow 2016 draft class passers Carson Wentz and Jared Goff, he had no fifth-year option in his contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. The Cowboys could of course always franchise tag him if they can’t work something out, but that would be less than ideal.
The Jones family has been adamant all along that a deal will get done, but Prescott and his representatives are clearly playing hardball in negotiations. The Cowboys finally managed to lock up Ezekiel Elliott right before the start of the season, but are at an impasse with Prescott and top receiver Amari Cooper. Cooper is reportedly content to play out his contract and become a free agent, and it looks like both will be without new deals for a while. The lack of progress clearly isn’t hurting Dallas’ on-field product, as they’ve raced out to a 3-0 record.
Another Flacco
Flacco won a SB though.
What a dumb argument, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl too.
Dak hasn’t though
Dak and Dunk is getting an inflated sense of self worth. He should realize the teams he’s played so far are not much better than high school teams. Wait until they have to play a real team and he’ll be wishing he’d signed whatever they were offering!
The nicknames are cute, but you’re not paying attention. Prescott throws a very good long ball (I believe he’s top 5 in some obscure over 30? yards in the air stat). He’s pretty much a top 10 QB now. Looking forward to the crow eating …
I spit a little coffee out of my nose when I read top 10 qb. Keep in mind they’ve played the equivalent of high school football teams so far this year. When they actually have to play a decent team he won’t be able to think about chicken nuggets in the huddle.
I’ll talk to you at the end of the season. Prescott shows up no matter what the opponent. And he doesn’t play a NE schedule for half the season.
He does play in the NFC East though, so that should be 6 guaranteed wins and a quick exit once again from the playoffs. But keep dreaming since he looked like Dak and Dunk last night playing the Saints!
we will find out after these next two games.
He’s not that good.. as you say – unless passing for 6 yard completions. He’s playing being an elite O line. He has a running game supporting him. Any QB would look great under this scenario.
I don’t understand the talk that he’s in the drivers seat. If he got sacked today and tore up his knee…. what type of contract would he get then?
Damn y’all str8 haters Give the man some respect. 95% of the team that are undefeated have weak schedule. As I recall saints on team that played team that total out to a winning record plus this is nfl professionals
Can someone translate please
LOL!
They should wait and see how this year plays out and then franchise tag him. The Cowboys have all the leverage…..
I agree I don’t really see how dak has leverage, he’s barely average when zeke isn’t on the field, Dallas has the ability to franchise him and I cannot see another team in the league meeting his demands in free agency…all of that gives Dallas the leverage
Yeah, I can’t see another team meeting his demands in free agency either. More like a dozen teams. No worries though, Dallas isn’t letting him walk though.
The Cowboys have all the leverage? Kirk Cousins comes to mind and Dak’s going to get WAY more than him.
The Redskins suck, but at least they were honest & knew Cousins wasn’t the long term answer after tagging him. Now the Vikes know it as well, but have another season of mediocrity waiting them.
Same for Dak. Let him prove it this year and next on the tag. If he earns it great, if not let him walk. No way I would have turned down $30m for $250k this year.
The Redskins are broken. The coach wanted him, but the front office did not. Hard to make a clean decision with that kind of disagreement.
Zeke is the proverbial straw that stirs the drink, but, Dak, through three games has really looked like a top of the line qb.
I was not much of a Dak fan prior to this year, but I was very surprised to hear that he is the 2nd most winning QB over the last 3 years behind Tom Brady. You cannot do that in the NFL without an excellent QB. While I agree Dallas holds all the leverage here, Dak has certainly earned a very large pay day and should definitely be considered a Top 10 QB in the league. He’s a man on a mission this season too, so I don’t foresee a sizable drop off in performance. His price is doing nothing but going up each week he plays.
Not close worth to the contract he seeks. He will never win a SB his game relays on RB’s and WR’s and odds are whoever is willing to pay him top dollar won’t be loaded at either position. Looks like he prefers money over a SB ring and a legacy such a shame.
The cowboys win because of Zeke not this clown
Wrong
