Eli Manning might not be happy about being benched for Daniel Jones, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll ask for a trade. The Giants quarterback has no immediate plans to waive his no-trade clause and facilitate a deal, sources close to the QB tell SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano.
There are plenty of reasons for Eli to stay – New York has been his home for 16 years, he has a small family with four kids, and it’s also unlikely that another team would be willing to take on his contract. Many of Manning’s struggles could be blamed on the Giants’ lack of talent and never-ending string of injuries in recent years, but it’s clear that the veteran is a shell of the player that he once was.
Given his $23.2MM salary this year and his iffy showing in the first two games of the season, there’s no obvious fit for Manning anywhere in the league. Of course, if Manning finds himself itching to play, and a QB-needy team is willing to try and turn back the clock, things could change between now and the Oct. 29 deadline.
The Giants would probably like to see Manning retire a Giant and continue to mentor Jones in the interim. Still, it’d be hard for them to say no if Manning asked for a trade.
4 kids is a large family in my neck of the woods
Not in my part of the holler…..
23.2 Mill is a little something to support a family, huh?
Are teams allowed to send money/take on parts of the salary in football I.e. Giants send Manning and $16 mil for a better pick? I know they can In baseball, didn’t know if it could happen in football
It’s sort of happened but not mid season. Sam Bradford had an 11M roster bonus that was laid before he got traded for a 1st.
Browns took on Brocks salary for a 2nd round pick. Much more prevalent in MLB than the NFL to send money. Mainly bc it’s fake money in the NFL it all just ties to the salary cap, his base salary is only 11.5M, his cap hit is 23.5M. The signing bonus, roster bonus and workout bonus have been paid.
The football cap is confusing. Why would the trading team be on the hook with Eli, but yet when the giants traded Snacks and Apple mid year last year giants took the hit. Same with Beckham. Does it have something to do with signing bonus?
Waive the No Trade if they can swing a trade with Dad’s old team
Play for 5 weeks? What would the saints do to absorb his cap figure?
let’s be serious; who in their right minds would want this fossil?
man dude, just don’t try hanging around and hope to land a job.get paid for this year and mentor the kid.announce your retirement and ride off into the sunset.i realize it’s easy for me to say that but we’ve seen bunch of guys just floating trying to hook a team when those good days are long gone.
Sit on the bench, cash those checks and let the new guy figure it out. They call you up again say you a back ailment and tell them figure it out.
He’s trash anyways
