The Cowboys may be exploring high-profile defensive back additions again. With the Dolphins giving Minkah Fitzpatrick permission to seek a trade, the Cowboys have engaged in discussions, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald notes.
Other suitors loom, with Salguero adding the Dolphins have talked to “several” teams. But the Cowboys are the first to be connected to the second-year defensive back. Stephen Jones confirmed during a 105.3 The Fan interview the Cowboys have engaged in talks with the Dolphins in the past 24 hours but declined to specify the nature of those discussions, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota (on Twitter). Throwing a bit of cold water on the prospect of Fitzpatrick in Dallas, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News notes (via Twitter) the Cowboys have merely kicked the tires here.
After being connected to Earl Thomas for most of 2018, the Cowboys offered a second-round pick. That did not satisfy the Seahawks, and the sides moved on. Dallas retained its starting combination of Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath for this season. The Dolphins are said to want a first-round pick for Fitzpatrick, the 2018 No. 11 overall selection.
It’s also unclear at what position the Cowboys or another team would prefer Fitzpatrick play. The Alabama product has played both cornerback and safety, with the Dolphins also having him work in the slot and at linebacker this season. The endless roving has frustrated Fitzpatrick, who represents one of the Dolphins’ few remaining assets that would fetch a high price in a trade. Miami has already unloaded Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, Robert Quinn and Ryan Tannehill in 2019 deals. GMs have been contacting Chris Grier about Dolphin assets since the Tunsil trade.
Fitzpatrick could be under a new team’s control through the 2022 season. A fifth-year option decision will not be due until May 2021. None of his base salaries exceed $2.5MM on his rookie deal.
Fins are going to want multiple picks including a first.
Likely deal would be something like
Mia: Dallas first and fourth
Dallas: fitz and a 7th
I’d be good with that as a phins fan.
I think it’s gonna be a combination of players and picks. Taco and maybe even Byron Jones with a 1st or second.
Byron Jones replacement when he leaves
There’s no reason for Miami to take anything less than a 1st plus. His team friendly contract and youth, there is no reason to trade him unless you get blown away. They had the same plan with Tunsil, not actively shopping but if you blow them away they will bite
You’re not serious about ‘rebuilding’ by cutting/trading early 20 somethings on team friendly rookie deals in premier positions. It’s always said get a QB, LT, CB, and blitzer. Miami wants to trade 2 of the 4. Joke of a franchise.
Only bad part of their Tannehill trade was the dead cap they were hit with….but I’m sure they tanking for Lawrence in 2021
If they tank for 2 years, It’ll be a new HC and GM; just like Cleveland.
The gm head coach in Cleveland were terrible but it did give them the picks to get baker and obj so they served their purpose
Baker is still under 500 & Odell cares more about wearing watches than playing football. W Sapp said it best “Can’t wear a $350k watch and play like a $2 bill.”. The former GM is like an assistant’s assistant & Hue didn’t even get a chance to interview for any coaching gig; not line, LB, DB’s nothing.
I kinda believe in it if your gonna suck y not really suck go into next 2 drafts with 10 picks top 3 rounds to turn team around
It seems to me that the Dolphin’s desire to move him around to multiple positions would indicate that they don’t think he’s star-caliber at any one position. Position flexibility is definitely desirable, but like a utility player in baseball, position flexibility is a thing when you’re not a stud at one position.
I’m not sure I understand why they would even entertain a trade of a second year 1st round pick, who has played pretty well. Dolphins are trying to change the culture in Miami as shown by the Stills/Tunsil trade.
Jerry Jones already signed him to a 5 year extension.
With Donovan Wilson on hand, I wouldn’t even entertain giving Miami a 1st rounder for Minkah.
1st is steep for safety, but all premium safeties go top-10. They would need to trade up to get one, so a late 1st for Fitz is not that bad of a trade for Cowboys. Anything beyond is an overpay.
Do it Jones! Byron’s contract is due! And you still have to pay Dak!
