Texans pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney wants out, and now we know why. The star defender planned to report this week, until he found out the team wanted to trade him, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears.

Originally, Clowney was slated to report after Week 3 of the preseason. Now, no one knows when – or if – Clowney will show up.
Trade rumors have swirled around Clowney for some time now, but, this summer, it sounds like he was operating under the assumption that he would stay put. The Texans’ recent front office shakeup undoubtedly played a role in Clowney’s situation – former GM Brian Gaine was in favor of giving Clowney a new deal, but head coach Bill O’Brien was reportedly against it. Clowney has been extension-eligible since January 2017 but, so far, the Texans have been unwilling to commit.
Clowney recently met with Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and the Fins view themselves as the favorites to land the former No. 1 overall pick. Meanwhile, Clowney is reportedly eyeing the Seahawks and Eagles.
I hate to wish this guy on any team, especially my favorite… If push comes to shove… Come on Philly!
Please don’t come to the AFC East with the Dolphins. We need Sam to stay healthy. 😉
If considering yourself the favorite for obtaining an underachieving former overall number 1 pick makes you feel good, by all means go for it. My guess is that the assets you give up will not be worth the price, or the money you have to pay this guy. Plus he’s a “Me First” guy, which hardly endears him to his team. For Houston, I would think it would be addition by subtraction.
Exactly. This guy has had some flashes in his career but to me has been an overall bust. Me first guy, turns it on when he wants to, he has generational talent yet never really lived up to what he could’ve so far IMO.
The hype-train got out of control with one highlight hit in college. A run-stopping DE is not worth the #1 overall pick, but that one play convinced many—including himself—that he was more than he really is.
O’Brien should not be involved in personnel decisions.
Probably the best DE vs the run. And a 2nd/3rd tier sack guy.
They are not willing to pay him market value and willing to take pennies on the dollar for him? Smart plan.
I’m actually curious – is it not tampering for other teams to meet with Clowney and discuss a long term deal with him because he hasn’t signed the tender? Just seems weird that they can do that while he’s still under Texans team control even though not signed to a contract
I doubt any teams are anywhere close to a point where they are actually talking about extensions for Clowney and in any event it would be hard for the Texans to sound a “tampering” alarm when they have been shopping this guy for a few months now.
He was tagged with a non-exclusive designation. He’s still a free agent, and he could actually sign with another team, but it would cost that team 2 1st Rd picks.
Well reports said that he had a trade incentive which means he can basically talk to other teams and pick which team he wants to get traded to and then he will sign the franchise tender and get traded im pretty sure that’s what’s going on
trading for clowney would be just as stupid as when the Dolphins signed Suh
Overpaying in a trade or in salary would be,but Clowney would make more sense than Suh.Suh was an interior lineman, facing c/g double teams.Clowney, being on the end could force teams to use a te to double team him.Suh was a mistake because they failed at building the rest of the defense around him.
Hitting on a 2nd or 3rd round pick would be more cost efficient, but they still have to hit on the picks. If you’re taking a de in the 2nd or 3rd Rd,you’re hoping to get a productive enough end to add pressure on the edge, and productive enough to make multiple pro bowls. You’re still gonna have to pay him by year 5 to keep him.And Clowney is also more scheme versatile than Suh was.
Overrated by a fair amount. Five seasons, only one did he play all 16 games, not worth the $$$ for a first round pick or massive lifetime contract.
When the field is so choppy that it takes out the knee of your 1st round draft choice, it’s not the 1st round draft choice’s fault.
It is decisions like this why Houston never goes anywhere. Anyone who truly sees this guy as a bust knows nothing about football. When you watch a Houston game and you see them orchestrating a blitz and you see a guy get to the quarterback on blocked watch the replay where Clowney is. You will see he is being double teamed or at the second stage of the play game chipped by a wide receiver or a tight end while being blocked by offense of tackle. This guy is an absolute nightmare for offense of coordinators to plan for and is a main reason why Houston has been a top three defense every year for the past four seasons. Draft bust? LMMFAO! Hardly! I really wish people who have no idea what they are talking about to just keep their mouth shut if you truly believe he is a bust I am begging you have someone with some football knowledge educate you on the game because you’re obviously very football on educated. These are the same people that if he gets traded will be complaining Houston is getting no pass rush this season and how they are getting gashed in the run game and getting absolutely torched in the past game but will say not having Clowney has nothing to do with it LOL.
Your post is offense of.
Clowney hasn’t had to be double teamed since High School. Except maybe at the strip club. Pretty sure that was JJ Watt you were looking at. Need an eye exam Misfit.
Put him on the rams squad and dominate the entire game of football this year!!!!!
