The Patriots aren’t done trading for offensive linemen. About an hour after acquiring Korey Cunningham from the Cardinals, the Pats went out and got another body up front.
New England has reached a deal with Baltimore to trade for guard Jermaine Eluemunor, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com (Twitter link). In the deal, the Ravens will send Eluemunor and a sixth-round pick to the Pats a fourth-round pick, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter hears.
Hensley writes that Eluemunor was originally the favorite to start at left guard for the Ravens, but he “fell out of favor” after failing a conditioning test earlier this offseason. He also had several nagging injuries that kept him off the practice field.
Terms of the deal weren’t immediately disclosed, and the Ravens later tweeted out they were receiving an “undisclosed draft pick.” The Patriots needed some offensive line depth, so these moves make some sense. After it was revealed that David Andrews might miss the entire season with a blood clot, Ted Karras became the starting center. Karras was also a reserve guard, and the Pats’ interior line became pretty thin with him getting bumped up to a starting role.
Eluemunor was drafted by the Ravens in the fifth-round back in 2017. He started two games as a rookie and one last year. The Texas A&M product isn’t a lock to make New England’s roster, especially if the pick they gave up for him turns out to be conditional.
Why does any AFC contender trade anyone to the Pats? Somehow, this’ll come back to bite the Ravens
100% agree, why not reap the advantage of the top competition being weak?
Chances are he was going to be cut so why not get something for him?
Or the Ravens were about to cut him and stole a draft pick… Bill will not like JE’s work ethic… Ravens stole a 6th or 7th rounder on this one!!!
It’s the pats…they win every trade
The Patriots also got a pick back in this trade.
Still curious if it’s a conditional draft pick
They could cut him for nothing and have to pay have dead cap space or they could trade him for a pick and only be on the hook for any remaining bonus if he had any. (Which is not likely being a late round pick.)
If he won’t make the Ravens roster what makes you think he’d play in NE?
Because New England doesn’t have depth at the O-line spots so they made two trades today yo get O-lineman
I really can’t remember a time when OL depth was this thin throughout the league. Several teams besides the Patriots are also kicking over every rock to find some help. Had the AAF survived these NFL teams would have at least got a free preview of offensive lineman that could be developed but now they are left grasping for anyone who isn’t a turnstile.
Defensive linemen have gotten much better and the refs are calling more holding. Apparently pass blocking is tougher than run blocking as more linemen fail on pass blocking. It’s now a passing league.
Basically offensive linemen have to really up their game to be able to keep a level playing field between defense and offense. Interesting times.
This trade will be a chance for him to get his act together. If he doesn’t he will be gone. I’m hearing the 4th pick the Pats gave up is most likely conditional. They did get a 6th round pick back but if he gets released or does not play X snaps the Pats pick might drop down to a 5th or a future 5th etc.
He only plays if Wynn, Thuney, Mason or Cannon gets hurt (don’t think he can play center) and this is assuming he takes the back up swing tackle job away from Skinner and or Croston.
