Throughout much of the summer, we have heard that the Cowboys have not made much progress in contract talks with their top extension-eligible players. However, a report from earlier this week suggested that Dallas had a decent shot at reaching long-term pacts with wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott before Week 1.
But if what Michael Lombardi of The Athletic hears is accurate, the optimism surrounding the Prescott negotiations may not be entirely well-founded. Per Lombardi’s sources, Prescott has turned down an offer that features an average annual value of $30MM (Twitter link). Recent reports have suggested that the Cowboys’ offer to Prescott would pay him like a top-5 QB, and Matt Ryan‘s AAV of $30MM is currently the fifth-highest in the league.
Of course, the real issue is how much guaranteed money the Cowboys are offering Prescott, and it seems unlikely that the team is anywhere close to the $94.5MM in full guarantees that the Falcons gave Ryan. So while Lombardi may be right to call Prescott “nuts” for turning down a $30MM/year proposal, we would need more details before assessing his decision one way or another.
We explored Prescott’s case for a new deal back in June. The two-time Pro Bowler is far from a perfect passer, but he has piloted his team to two playoff berths in his first three seasons in the league, and given the current climate, $30MM/year is right around his fair market value.
bye felicia
lets face it; there are sevarel players in Dallas who deserve top-dollar for their positions, and Dak is the odd man out. he’s not a terrible QB, but would probably still only be average in an era withought as many great QBs as there are. that’s what he is; average. sometimes you can overpay a player, namedly a QB, and get away with it, but the Cowboys don’t have the cap space. better deal him and get another QB to save the cap space.
Who else could they get right now and have a chance at winning?? Nobody. He’s still super young, better than half of the QB’s currently in the league, dual threat QB, and has the best tools in the league surrounding him, he’s only gonna get better with time. Pay him, Overpay if they must, but don’t lose him because you’re scared to spend the money. He’s not gonna be a Matt Stafford, or Kirk Cousins or Mike Glennon.
Dak is average at best, he doesn’t deserve 30MM a year and if he seriously turned it down, goodbye.
Dual threat? He’s not good at throwing the ball so he can’t be dual
Dallas will be good for years they should have drafted a QB in mid rounds this year and planned for this.
Cooper 5 year deal, Zeke 3, and Dak can stick to his yogurt commercials.
You should be a GM considering you think it’s so easy drafting a quarterback in the middle rounds.
Where do you think Prescott came from?
Prescott will be overpaid at $30 per early in the contract, and underpaid at the end of the contract. That might make him paid in the top 5 highest QB salaries now, but in several years that will plummet as new deals get done. Dug, you must not be a Cowboys fan (or football fan) if you think it’s that easy to find a good QB. We’re not that far removed from the Chad Hutchinsons and Cliff Stoerners of the NFL world. Name 5 QBs better than Prescott, not named Brady, that were drafted in the middle rounds of the draft in the last 20 years. The easiest position to fill, by far, is RB. If you have to let anyone walk, it’s Zeke.
Mike Glennon? Theres a guy id take Dak over
Blake bortles could easily do dak’s job
Yeah, Bortles is what you’re gonna lead with?
granted; they arent winning anything thid year if they trade Dak. that being said, trading this season for perhaps a few more like this if you get a cheaper QB would be a wise (if undoable) idea. And even if you have a guy outside the league’s top 32 QB’s, theres still the supporting staff to lead you to a wild card. this year could be good for them, but theres a crowded NFC field, so the difference between Dak and X random QB could be nothing as far as where you get into the postseason and how far you go.
What an idiot.
Two pro bowls in three years he won’t be on the market for long maybe he do need to go somewhere he would be appreciated
they weren’t 2 deserved pro bowls
$30mil a year is not being appreciated? This guys a moron!
Pro Bowls are overrated. All Pro is meaningful
In what world is Dak even a top 15 QB in this league?
Name the top 15 qb’s.
mahomes
Brees
Brady
trubisky
luck
Roethlisberger
Rivers
ryan
Cousins
Goff
Winston
Rodgers
Mayfield
Jackson
Watson
are all better than Dak
Wentz
Wentz’s top 9 passing efforts have all resulted in Eagle losses while Prescott’s top 9 passing efforts have all resulted in Cowboy wins. Prescott would be a fool to accept a contract extension for less than the one Philadelphia gave Wentz.
Take off Winston and Jackson, add Russ Wilson and Sam Darnold.
LMAO Dak is a dumpster fire not a QB if it’s a qb in the league with a beating heart they are better than Dak I would want Uncle Rico or Curtis painter than Dak
No Wilson shows you shouldn’t make lists. There are only a few I would take over Wilson. Brees Brady and Rodgers are some you might disagree but only because of age. Guys with one or two years experience are tough to gauge because you never know been a few that have fallen apart after a year or so. Look what Sanchez did his first couple years. Not much different than Dak a running game that hid his flaws. Time will tell though. He is crazy though to turn down that contract on face value but like the writer said it is about guaranteed money.
I’ll take Prescott over all of them!
Trubisky, Watson, Winston, and Jackson are not better than Dak. Wentz can’t stay on the field. Dak is a winner and finds a way to win games.
I’d still let him walk though for 30+ million.
Never forget David Carr beat him in an passing contest badly just straight up embarrassed him
If Zeke doesn’t come back look at Dak to be worst QBs in the league the best part of his game is handing the ball off
Let him walk
Dak Should Have Took that Deal And Gave Zeke 20mil And Said Thank You Lol
I just don’t understand Dak’s position here. He’s getting a great offer but is willing to risk it for one year for what? He isn’t going to get much more AAV, maybe a little more guaranteed money. Is it worth it to take the risk for an extra 5-10 million ? Not IMO.
Wonder if it’s a 30 in the Colin Kaepernick type of contract terms where the guaranteed money isn’t there.
But from the Boy’s perspective, just focus on Tua or Lawrence while franchise tagging Dak. Zeke stirs the drink. 76 QB Rating without Zeke compared to his career avg of 96. Declining QBR YOY. I mean unless they go to the SB no reason to pay him insane money. And honestly paying any QB now is insane. If you can get to the SB with Nick Foles and Jared Goff why you paying someone 30+M?
I like Dak more than most but c’mon dude. You’re not that good. 15-20th ranked QB at best.
Take the money dak! Remember we still have to pay coop, zeke and b. Jones.
Jones is getting embarrassed by his own boys.
hey, Colin…there’s an opening for a quarterback, cheaper than their starter!
Washed up!
As an Eagles fan that is GREAT NEWS LOL
Your 30 million dollar QB can’t stay on the field. As a Cowboys fan, that’s good news.
Dak needs to start considering the endorsement deals he will get as a Cowboy versus the endorsements deals he would get if he wasn’t with Dallas. I get wanting to get paid, but as everyone points out he isn’t a top ten QB. If he is trying to get more guaranteed money, I don’t blame him. But trying to get more than $30M annually is absurd. Could he get more from someone like Tampa Bay? Very likely he would. But he would be walking away from huge marketing opportunities for himself. The Cowboys have set this team up for Dak. He’d be a fool to risk playing for anyone else.
You basically sabotaged your own argument by saying the Cowboys have set the team up for Dak. If that were the case then management would have far more to lose by not giving into his demands.
Not really. The team has been set up to hide Dak’s flaws. He has one of the better offensive lines protecting him, yet he still gets sacked like crazy. He has one of the best RB’s in the game that teams have to focus on. He has a number of WR’s (plus Zek) that are good on short routes. They have a very simple offense in place. There are a lot of QB’s that could thrive in a place with protection and short drop offs.
My point was that if Dak went somewhere else, his flaws would be exposed big time.
I agree with this for sure. Romo could take this team to an NFC championship at the very least.
Dallas will draft Jalen Hurts to replace Dak!
Dallas will draft Tate martell……would be even more hilarious
