The Saints and Michael Thomas are “close” to getting a deal done, Mike Florio of PFT hears. It’s still not a done deal, but Florio expects a five-year extension worth either $19MM or $20MM per season.
There might not be much left to debate in terms of overall value, but as with any NFL deal, the two sides are probably still haggling over guarantees, bonuses, and the all-important cash flow. In the interim, Thomas will reportedly continue to stay away from training camp.
At one point in time, Thomas was reportedly pushing for $22MM per year, which would have blown the contracts of Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio Brown out of the water. Thomas’ reduced ask should be more palatable for the Saints, who are still in a tricky cap situation thanks in large part to Drew Brees‘ contract.
Still only 26, Thomas is one of the best young wide receivers in the NFL. Last year, he led the league with 125 catches while recording 1,405 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
Reportedly, fellow NFC South star Julio Jones is also on the cusp of a new extension. His brand new deal with the Falcons could become official before the end of business on Friday.
i love brees but people saying brees makes this guy who he is is bull. if u watch saints football its now more than ever that brees needs a reciever with crazy catch radius and extreme fight after the catch, and that is thomas. he will likely be good no matter who’s throwin him the ball, barring injury.
I’m sorry but I don’t believe you’ve been paying attention. It seems to me that Drew’s accuracy is just getting better. Look at the completion percentage and you’ll see that. There was a highlight reel on Instagram that showed Drew dripping dimes between double coverage and just over out stretched arms of defenders, placing it perfect in the finger tips of his receivers. Accuracy is defiant NOT a problem for Brees.
So your saying if he was in Arizona last year, or Miami or Jacksonville he’d have been just as good? They make each other better, it’s not one way or the other
ok im not sayin hed have the same numbers but in that offense bridgewater still gets him 90 catches and 1300 yards easy.
So you’re saying he’s a system WR got it
brees is great, thomas is great…there
I love Thomas but Drew’s 74+% completion rate contradicts your point for sure. Thomas deserves any and all money they are able to pay him. He is a BEAST without a doubt but he has benefited some from playing with Brees.
If this deal gets signed the first year is not going to hurt them as the salary is expected to be in the area of 200 million it will be after that. Still do not think this guy is worth 19-20 or year because as we saw in the postseason when you stick an all world defensive back on Thomas he disappears.
it was a bigger prob that no one is on the other side of him drawing coverage, this is why he bounces to the slot often
