Mark Sanchez is trading in his helmet for a headset. The former Jets, Cowboys, and Redskins quarterback will retire from the NFL to become a college football analyst for ABC and ESPN, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.
Sanchez, 32, spent ten years in the NFL. His most notable run at quarterback came with the Jets, where he began his career with back-to-back AFC Championship Games under Rex Ryan. Ryan was especially fond of Sanchez and even got a tattoo of his wife wearing Sanchez’s No. 6 jersey.
Sanchez may be best remembered these days for the “butt fumble,” but his early accomplishments should not be discounted. The former No. 5 overall pick was a quality young leader for those early Jets teams and enjoyed a multi-year run as a New York media darling.
Now, the USC product will relive his other glory days in the broadcast booth. We here at PFR wish Sanchez the best in retirement.
Happy Retirement to the man who gave us one of the most unforgettable plays in NFL history. Wishing him nothing but the best moving forward
….”nothing butt the best” you mean
Lmao
Sanchez was a good guy on the Jets. Pete Carroll his coach at USC said he should stay another year in college. He was probably right. Sanchez only had minimal starting experience in college. I remember when they drafted him I was excited but then during training camp you heard those dreaded words “accuracy issues.” He became the target for the Jets woes. I’m betting he’ll be great in the booth.
Wasn’t the only USC QB not to live up to the hype, but getting to the AFC championship twice so early in his career was more than many have accomplished. I think the notoriety over that fumble was juvenile at best.
he was still in the NFL?
yes
Possibly for longer than you were…
one of the most unreasonably criticized players in Philly history. I for one appreciate his work in 2014. Thanks Mark!
Agreed!
Could you please not mention the Redskins association? Gruden was insane to bring in Sanchez with Kaepernick on the market. Sanchez lived up to high expectations by throwing two interceptions and fumbling the ball in the only half that he played for Washington before yielding his place behind the center to Hall of Fame QB Josh Johnshon.
Really think they gave him a fair shot in DC?
“This Sunday, Jay Gruden will ask him to just that. The Redskins coach recognizes how difficult that might be.
“It’s a huge leap,” Gruden said. “It’s a huge leap playing with guys you don’t even know. I don’t even know if he knows all the guys on our team’s names.”
Gruden’s comments do a good job of explaining the mountainous challenge in front of the Redskins and Sanchez. The quarterback can’t know the full playbook yet and has hardly any familiarity with his receivers or offensive line. Sanchez doesn’t even know where the home locker room is at FedEx Field. “

I scan the articles in reverse chronological order so now it makes sense why the Jets are holding back 100k from Williams. Gotta build a giant butt statue to honor Sanchez.
I was not a fan of his while he was on the field never thought he should be starting but best of luck to him in the next phase of his life
