The Broncos’ negotiations with second-round picks Drew Lock and Dalton Risner have hit a snag, as Mike Klis of KUSA writes. Lock, the No. 42 pick, is seeking a “quarterback premium,” meaning that he wants more money than his draft slot dictates. Meanwhile, Risner, the No. 41 overall choice, doesn’t want to take less money than the player behind him.
Heading into the draft, many believed that Lock would be selected in the first round. His unexpected slide landed him in the eager arms of John Elway, who traded back into Round Two to grab him. From a career perspective, Lock is in a solid situation as the heir apparent to Joe Flacco‘s starting job. However, his camp is looking to recoup some of the money that was lost by his drop.
What this effectively means is that Lock and Risner (the team’s expected starting left guard) might not be in attendance for the first meeting for rookies on Wednesday or practice on Thursday. It’s unlikely that either situation will result in a prolonged stalemate, but stranger things have happened in the NFL.
didn’t know lock hasn signed yet, hopefully they get it done, still thinks a veteran backup QB would be a great pickup.
a veteran qb to backup Flacco? Why?
I just thought since Flacco said it’s not his job to mentor Lock, you could get someone in there to work with Lock similar to an Austin Davis role in ‘16. Flacco
That is what the QB coach is for
He’s got a point that’s what they did with Lamar Jackson and rg3 in Baltimore
Maybe he should take a lesson from a few guys that for drafted later than him and he will never be as good as. Brady and Wilson were both taken later never hold a candle to them. I know there are others but they came out right away.
I guess you can say signing him isn’t a lock yet ?
Haha
Hehe
let him sit. there is a reason he dropped and it’s likely because of attitude
agreed. what a baby.
This will set horrible precedent in the future if the Broncos cave. It will mean that the salary guidelines will be meaningless and players will just renegotiate.
I thought the rookie draft wages were set in stone?
I did too.
Not the Broncos fault he slid to the 2nd. Man up and show people how much you are worth instead of just talking about it.
draft slots are set in stone for what they should make… if anything RBs should be paid higher bc they get drilled into the ground in there rookie contracts… QBs will get paid when there contract is up. i dontthink he has a choice but to take what his draft position means… other then a huge signing bonus bc i dont think that is in the math for the actual negotiations but even then… this isnt good if anything this will drive up costs… if he wants more then what his contract is worth now… then hes gonna want way more then that when his contract is up… sorry broncos fans but this QB u drafted is gonna break ya.
Elway can relate to being a d bag QB draft pick. Set this precedent himself
Exactly my initial thought. Ironic that 3 decades later it’s Elway on the other side.
Take your rookie contract, suit up, play ball, earn a bigger contract in a few years kid.
Slid to the 2nd round for a reason I would assume. It may suck for him, but that’s how it goes. Sign your deal and prove you are worth more come extension time.
Slid for a reason? Like Aaron Rodgers went from projected number one to number 26? Think before you talk. This happens all the time in the draft with no rhyme or reason behind it.
There is plenty of reason behind it. For example, a QB needy team, or one looking for the future felt like they were worth the spot and could get him in a later round.
*weren’t worth…
Put the bag of money on a table and let Risner and Lock arm wrestle for it.
Split the difference. Then offer him a Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme bar as a signing bonus. No way he refuses.
His personality reminded me of Rosen leading up to the draft. He’s gonna bust too
