While the Eagles and Carson Wentz are negotiating an extension that is expected to be finalized before the season, the Rams and Jared Goff have not made similar progress. It is not clear if they have begun re-up talks. But the notion the team is toying with the idea of using the two-time Pro Bowler during his rookie deal and moving in is not rooted in reality, Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic notes (subscription required). The Rams are committed to building a roster around a franchise-level Goff contract, per Bonsignore. Goff stands to make more than $20MM in 2020 on his fifth-year option but is tethered to merely an $8.89MM cap number this season. Sean McVay has not said if the Rams plan to extend Goff this year, mentioning the possibility of a deal being tabled until 2020.
Shifting to another quarterback’s contract, here is the latest from the NFC West:
- Geno Smith landed with a fourth team in four years recently, linking up with the Seahawks. His one-year deal is for the minimum salary, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN.com (on Twitter). He’ll receive just $25K guaranteed on the $895K deal as he competes with Paxton Lynch to serve as Russell Wilson‘s backup. Lynch is making $645K this year. Neither is a lock to be on Seattle’s roster when the regular season begins. Despite these two high picks’ struggles as NFLers, each profiles as a bigger name than the Seahawks have employed behind Russell Wilson over the past two seasons.
- More Seahawks details: Al Woods‘ deal points to the veteran defensive tackle having a slightly better chance to make the 53-man roster. But the 10th-year lineman’s pact is worth slightly less than originally reported, as is often the case. Woods can earn up to $2.25MM, but the base value of this pact is $1.25MM, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times notes. A five-team veteran who played two games with 2011 Seahawks, Woods received $400K guaranteed. The deal will count $2.215MM against Seattle’s cap. This deal is similar to those given to Tom Johnson and Shamar Stephen last year. Both made the team, though Johnson was cut midway through the season.
- Ahkello Witherspoon‘s 2018 season did not go well. The young cornerback graded as, by far, the worst full-time corner in the view of Pro Football Focus. But the 49ers signing Jason Verrett does not mean he will be the starter. Witherspoon will still be the man to beat at right cornerback, Matt Barrows of The Athletic writes (subscription required). Verrett is unlikely to be ready to go until training camp, Barrows adds.

Goff is overated and shrunk in the playoffs and super bowl. When gurley isnt a factor goffs flaws truly show. Rams wont handcuff themselves with a bad qb until he proves them otherwise.

I’m currently mixed on Goff, but when any offense becomes predictable, then it’s hard for any QB to be successful.
If you even look at Tom Brady last season, he was very average, even below average at times, until his own running game got going.
If the defense is able to pin their ears back, get pressure, and successfully press cover and knock off a team’s WR’s off their routes, you would be hard pressed to find ANY QB that will have any level of sustainable success…
Now, I’m not giving Goff a pass, I’m just saying you can’t solely blame him. That’s not even considering, the team Goff was facing. The Patriots and Belicheck are known for being able to take away a teams best WR. Take out Gurley, take out Kupp, and severely limit Cooks, and Goff really didn’t have any legitimate offensive weapons at his disposal to help him out.
As for Robert Woods, he’s a solid possession receiver, but his talents are predominantly predicated off a successful running game, play action, and allowing him to get free underneath. He’s a solid possession receiver, relative to Crabtree in his earlier years, but he should not be a winning team’s #1. After that, what’s left for Goff?? And it’ll be more of the same this year, unless Gurley is able to get healthy and help balance their offensive attack. If not, it’s def. going to put a whole heck of a lot of pressure on the back and shoulders of Goff..
Goff has a lot of promise, and he certainly has room to improve; however, like I said previously, without Gurley, he needs more help..
With the Rams recent histroy of QBs it would be incredibly dumb to trade Goff. Sure McVay is smarter than anyone they have had and i trust him to find a new QB if he wanted to. But still its a dangerous proposition to give up a solid QB

You’re probably right. Wentz is a running quarterback with a history of fragility. The odds are on Goff managing to make it as a pocket-passer for many years. Whether in LA or elsewhere. It sounds like Goff isn’t quite what McVay wants. So it makes sense that he doesn’t want to invest franchise destroying money into Goff.
