The Chargers have re-signed defensive tackle Damion Square on a one-year deal, according to a team announcement. Financial terms of the deal are not yet known.
Square, 30, has spent most of the past five seasons with the Chargers, appearing in 49 games with the club since 2014. An undrafted free agent who began his pro tenure with stints in Philadelphia and Kansas City, Square set a career-high in starts (11), tackles (31), and sacks (three) in 2018.
A better run-stuffer than a pass-rusher, Square played on roughly half of Los Angeles’ snaps a year ago but graded as a bottom-three interior defender, per Pro Football Focus. Over the course of four-plus years with the Bolts, Square has 5.5 sacks to his credit.
Square met with the Titans in April, but left Nashville without a deal.
A Tom Telesco specialty. “We are active in free agency…. we sign our own free agents.”
If our run defense was a problem, which it was, how is resigning the same players going to address the situation?
He adds depth and is already familiar with the defense.
And was part of the defense that was terrible against the run…
It was terrible in part to a lot of injuries ie., Liguit,Perryman,White,Brown,Mebane being out most of the year etc.
Add Perryman to the list of “sign our own free agents”…. again, not addressing the need for help on run defense. That’d be like resigning Jason verett to help address needs in the secondary. Thinking Perryman can stay healthy for even a majority of the season is foolish. And when Perryman and Thomas Davis our the additions to help your run defense…. and damion square…. yikes. Just yikes
Perryman is a great run stopper. Not sure what you are referring to. Yes he is injury prone but a heck of a player when he is in there. Nobody is happy with our run defense but hopefully having Jatavis Brown and Kazire White and Perryman healthy along with adding Tillery will really improve our run defense.I’ve read some good things on Broughten too.
It would sure help if Ingram and Bossa would step up in the run game too. The bare a lot of the criticism too.
Square is an awesome locker room guy. A good vet leader. He is solid depth with a positive attitude
