Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has given the team an April 15 deadline to complete negotiations on a new contract, a source tells Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. It’s not clear what the passing of the deadline without a deal would mean, but it would likely shut down talks until after his contract expires following the 2019 season.
As it stands, Wilson has one year to go on his four-year, $87.6MM deal. Wilson, who currently ranks 12th among QBs in yearly salary, likely wants a new deal to push him up the chart and he wants it done by the start of the club’s official offseason workout program. The reason for the deadline is unclear, but Wilson probably wants to minimize distractions heading into the new campaign.
In January, Wilson indicated he would be fine with playing the 2019 season without a new contract.
“Oh, yeah, if that’s what I’ve got to do,’’ Wilson said. “It’s business and everything else and I know essentially after this season I could potentially be a free agent, that kind of thing. I don’t think that way — I see myself being in Seattle. I love Seattle, special place for me. I also understand it’s a business world and everything else.”
The Seahawks also have the franchise tag on their disposal, so Wilson is not assured to reach free agency in March. The franchise tag for QBs would cost a projected $30.6MM and a repeat tag in 2021 would come in at a whopping $36MM. Meanwhile, the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2020 season, which may cloud negotiations for Wilson and other star players around the league.
@giants
Yeah for the low low price of the 6th, future 1st and 2nd.
Obviously a trade doesn’t make sense for either side. And obviously you know that 1 year of Wilson doesn’t even bring a single 1st rounder to Seattle, especially given the Giants rebuilding timeline, and that the Giants won’t pay Seattle more for the ability to negotiate with him. And Seattle wouldn’t trade him for that little.
So neither team would consider this, but Wilson is only worth what 1 season of Wilson is worth right now, which is probably a mid second rounder or lower, especially to NYG. NYG isn’t paying for a quality QB for only a rebuilding year. Disclosure: Not a fan of either team. Go Bears
Wlison would he wise to go to free agency and cash in huge though, given he’s this close.
You are so, so wrong. Do you really believe that Russel Wilson and Jimmy Garapolo have the same value, because that’s exactly what he got. The Rams traded a massive package just to be able to draft Goff, who is no where near the level of Wilson.
Lmao what the f are you on? Wilson is one of the best QBs, there’s talks of the Cards getting a 3rd for Rosen and you think a team could get Wilson for a mid 2nd/later pick???????? Giants sure are rebuilding with that Tate signing. With a contract extension 2 1sts is the min. And you do realize there’s a near 100% chance the Seahawks tag him if they can’t get a deal done right meaning he wouldn’t be a free agent until after the 2020 season at the earliest.
1. Rosen is on a rookie deal for 4 more years
2. Garappolo netted the patriots a 2nd and Jimmy needed a new contract.
3. Wilson wont net a 1st but given the fact his new team will dish out an extension a 2nd is reasonable. No way he nets a 1st being what 3 4 or 5 years older than garappolo?
Id say the Giants say yes to that and run away
Hahhh. He would be the best qb in giants history. Aint leaving Seattle
Y.A. Tittle and Fran Tarkenton are still better than Wilson, who would have to accomplish a lot as a Giant to dislodge either of them from the top two spots on the Giants’ All-Time Best QB’s list.
Tittle – In four years as a Giant, he made three Pro Bowls, was named a first-team All-Pro by the AP twice (other press associations did it three times), and was named league MVP by the AP once (and for two more years by UPI or the Newspaper Enterprise Association).
Tarkenton – Made four four Pro Bowls in five seasons, and is Pro Football Reference’s first-team QB for their NFL All-Decade 1960’s team.
They won’t sign him before the draft. Next offseason drama is up & running! Goodell must be smiling.
If he doesn’t sign by the deadline they should trade him. They should know by then if he wants to be in Seattle or not. I am not convinced he does.
Like all pro players, they want to be in the city that pays them the most! If the fins fork up $35m; Russ will be smiling claiming all along how he loves S. Florida.
Russell Wilson must have got some hot stock tips from Mychal Kendricks if he’s in this much of a rush to get a new contract done.
