It sounds like Robbie Gould won’t get his wish. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the organization won’t trade the veteran kicker (Twitter link). We learned earlier this week that the 36-year-old had requested a trade.
Gould was slapped with the franchise tag earlier this offseason with the understanding that the two sides would eventually agree to an extension. However, a new deal still hasn’t materialized, much to the dismay of the kicker.
“The bottom line is, I’m unsure if I want to play there anymore,” Gould said. “At this point, I have to do what’s best for me and my family back home.”
The recent reports indicated that Gould will refuse to sign a long-term pact with the 49ers. Meanwhile, the player’s agent said that if the kicker reports at all, it will not be before the Niners’ Sept. 8 regular season opener. Earlier this week, GM John Lynch said he fully expects Gould to be with the 49ers in 2019, and he reiterated that he wants to sign Gould to a multiyear deal
Following an 11-year stint with the Bears (and a one-year cameo with the Giants), Gould inked a two-year pact with the Niners in 2017. Recently, Gould grew tired of the protracted contract negotiations and indicated that he wanted to be closer to home with his family in Chicago.
Yikes. Lynch is delusional if he still thinks Gould will sign an extension…
shank a couple field goals and you’ll get your wish
I’m pretty sure you’re right, that’s where this is heading. No preseason, shows up game 1 and misses a key kick and then what? Lynch is not thinking this through. Move on from a disgruntled kicker. This is NOT the battle to fight.
There’s always the XFL.
Lynch trying to create trade leverage for a higher draft pick from the Bears?
anything higher than a 6th would be ridiculous and I love Gould. hope he’s back in Chicago, but it’s a kicker that’s 36….
Eh I doubt it. They won’t get better than a 7th or more likely a conditional 7th either way.
Love to hear athletes paid (and many over paid) for playing a game whine. Don’t like it Robbie go work at 7-11.
he doesn’t need to work, and he’s not under contract so blow it out your ***
fans like you suck
Take a knee during the anthem or maybe stick a klansman robe in Bosa’s locker and the Niners will probably trade you.
After he is 0-4 on FG’s and 2-4 on xtra points he will be a free agent. Lynch thinks he has all the cards on this well he dosent. Grab a 7th and move on
Exactly
I’ll bet Gould talked to him before they tagged him about wanting to go back to Chicago and he tagged him anyway. Now it’s come back to bite Lynch in the A$$.
are all of you 49ers fans or just fans speaking about the situation? i cant believe how many delusional niners fans are commenting about how they should let him walk or trade him for a 7th round pick! are you kidding me? he is a top 3 kicker in the nfl! you cant just replace that via free agency this late in the off season. whoever they replace him with is going to be a huge liability on extra points and field goals. that could make or break 2 to 3 games for them this year and be the difference on an 11-5 record or a 9-7 record or a 7-9 record. he can retire if he wants to go to chicago. the bears had them and they cut him. gould needs to get over it. thats on him and his reputation if he wants to miss kicks on purpose. niners can just place him on IR then if he decides to go that route. it always amazes me how fans undervalue the importance of a good kicker. bears might have made the superbowl if they had put more stock in a good kicker
