Some have speculated that the start of next week’s offseason conditioning program could serve as a deadline for the Cardinals to trade quarterback Josh Rosen, if their plan is indeed to draft Kyler Murray later this month. However, the Cardinals do not believe they have any sort of deadline to trade Rosen, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears, and they’re not going to simply give the UCLA product away.
There’s also a scenario in which they draft Murray and keep Rosen until they feel comfortable enough to move the rising NFL sophomore, Rapoport hears. The Cardinals’ comfort in trading Rosen, of course, would be dependent on the offers received for him, and estimations on the expected return vary wildly around the league. Coaches and executives from seven teams tell ESPN.com’s Josh Weinfuss that Rosen may be worth anywhere from a first- to a fifth-round pick. Arizona traded up from No. 15 in last year’s draft to draft Rosen No. 10 overall.
“If you liked him last year in the first round, I don’t know why you wouldn’t give up that this year,” one head coach said of Rosen, last year’s No. 10 overall choice.
Rosen did not impress as a rookie – he threw for 11 touchdowns against 14 interceptions and completed just 55.2% of his throws. However, his struggles could be chalked up to the team’s overall issues, which culminated in the firing of head coach Steve Wilks.
Draft QB…fire HC…hire new HC…trade QB…draft QB…fire HC…hire new HC…trade QB…etc.etc. This is how you build a winner. LOL
Well said
Sounds like the continuous cycle the new Browns have been in with Owner/GM/Coach/QB….hopefully they have it right now.
What’s the rush. Let him compete for the starting job and teams will find out he’s not worth a second-rounder. No need to trade him now when there is preliminary intrigue.
Which by that reasoning is exactly why you trade him now. His value won’t be higher and soon the new class of QBs will soon join the fray.
Blame the owners. If head coaches had guaranteed contracts they wouldn’t be in a rush to try to make instant winners with players learning new systems every year. Coaches don’t have nearly enough time to coach these young players and everyone chalks it up to “bust”.
The old model of giving coaches time to develop players pretty much went out the window once the league adopted the salary cap system. Guaranteed contracts for coaches probably wouldn’t solve the problem…especially if coaches getting those guarantees were as bad as Hue Jackson.
Head coaches do have guarenteed contracts. You still have to pay them when they get fired
Which is exactly why I’ll never feel sorry for one of them when they get fired. They’re in a business where you get hired to get fired and when you do you still get paid the same on the couch as you would going to work.
If I didn’t get a 1, I’d keep him and draft Murray. What’s the worst that could happen? He struggles again and you get that 5th?
yeah turn down a potential 2nd rounder or a 3rd, and end up with only a 5th
Or, trade the 1st overall
Raiders make sense
Trade the 1st to the raiders for their 4th, late 1st this year, plus extra picks next year
Trade the 4th pick to a team like Denver to grab Haskins for their 6th and extra picks
Keep trading back till youre outside top 10 and then draft help for your young qb with extra picks. OL WR TE.
Rosen and a 6th to the NYG for their 2nd rounder.. I believe most, if not all, public NFL prospect grades had Rosen higher than Haskins leading up to the draft. If you compare year to year.
Also, Giants can them trade back w the 6th overall pick and add draft capital. They would be in a position to really upgrade their roster after making those deals.
That is an option. But I think they like the top pass rushers and are looking to take one at 6. But I like the idea of accumulating more picks. Especially if they trade their 2nd, then have nothing until 95.
I could see Arizona trading Rosen & 4th Round pick for a late 1st round pick. While Rosen wasn’t great last year, he did show glimmers of promise playing behind one of the worst O-Lines in football.
Miami could trade out of its 13th? Overall pick for a late 1st, 2nd & 5th..use that late first to get Rosen, and add another 4th round pick from Arizona. Washington could do something similar as well.
New England might be a good trade partner with either of these teams as they have too many picks and all signs point to them wanting one of the Iowa TE’s.
I agree. He was on a team that really didn’t have much to offer him. There were times he looked good which makes you wonder how he will do on a good team. Maybe Giants move in and use their other picks on spots they really need help at. I mean they do have 2 first round picks so they can pull the trigger on that trade and still get a high caliber player with their other first round pick.
I mean imagine him Barkley and maybe Metcalf… Sounds pretty good
They should hold on to him til after the draft. Don’t let people know your plans at QB. Or trade him on draft day to get more picks. Maybe his stock goes up after the draft if a team who needs a QB doesnt get the QB they wanted
Rosen’s trade value drops precipitously the instant the Cardinals make their first choice in the upcoming draft.
