With their first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Bengals addressed the offensive line by taking Alabama product Jonah Williams at No. 11. They attempted to do the same by trading up in the second round when a handful of projected first-round offensive linemen slipped, but nothing came to fruition, Bengals.com writer Geoff Hobson writes.
According to Hobson, the team couldn’t make a deal to draft Jawaan Taylor, Cody Ford or Greg Little, all of whom went in the first six picks of the second round, because it coveted its fourth-round picks.
“They tried trading up in the second round for one of those first-round offensive lineman that slid. But they were also adamant. They coveted one of those guys, but they were holding on to their fourth-rounder. And later their fifth. They came into the draft believing the fourth round was where they could make some hay,” Hobson writes.
Cincinnati ended up with three picks in the fourth round, and used those selections on NC State quarterback Ryan Finley, Arizona State defensive tackle Renell Wren and Ohio State guard Michael Jordan.
Without making that move, the Bengals offensive line projects to feature Williams at right tackle, with Cordy Glenn on the opposite side, Clint Boling and John Miller at guard, and 2018 first-round pick Billy Price at center.
Probably should have given up on those 4th round picks. Bengals are clueless. They love mediocrity
Cause you know people always live up to their draft status. Every 2nd round pick has better careers than 4th round picks.
Last time the Bengals took OL 1st and 2nd round they drafted two busts is ogbuehi and Fischer.
Bengals have holes to fill and you fill them by having draft picks.
Drafting 4 good guys is better than 1 elite guy and 3 poor guys.
No more uncle Marv!!!!!!!!!
if they csnt draft a decent lineman in round 1 and 2, what makes you think all these 4th rounders will pan out?
Also, going into the draft the prevailing belief was the strength this year was the middle rounds
You all can complain about the head coach or Dalton but the real problem is the tight wad owner, Mike Brown and his daughter who controls who the Bengals draft
This has been the case for so fuggn long now..I always tell ppl..as much as I absolutely love my Reds and Bengals..being a fan of them is just plain exhausting!
Can’t deny that Paul Brown did some really great things early on..but nowadays, ppl think we’re just making up excuses for losing when we say that they play the biggest role in our constant shortcomings..lol
I’m a big fan of stockpiling picks so I somewhat get the rationale, but I don’t think Michael Jordan was worth passing up a chance to get Cody Ford.
Ford could have been a great addition to their line, and having him, Jonah, Price, and Glenn could have actually had the makings of a solid group.
Ford>Jordan but Jordan+Sample>Ford. Not a 1-for-1 deal
That’s not what I said. Michael Jordan was one of the fourth rounders they insisted on keeping instead of moving up. So the cost of moving up in the second round would have essentially been Michael Jordan, hence why I said he wasn’t worth potentially moving up to get Ford.
Either way though, I’d rather have Ford than Jordan and Sample combined. Sample is just a blocking tight end.
I can see why they wanted to keep their 4th. Michael Jordan was a hell of a ball player. Not a big blocker though.
Bengals used their first pick on their top need and they have a new coaching staff in place. There is reason at last for folks in Cinci to have some optimism. This team is not on anyone’s radar but could spring a few surprises this season.
Lol, the Bungles will always be the Bungles
