We heard recently that the Cowboys were interested in bringing back linebacker Sean Lee for one more season, and now it’s official. Lee and the Cowboys have agreed to stick together for 2019, and are ironing out the details on what his contract will look like, sources told David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.
Lee is a Cowboys legend, and it was looking for a while like his time with the team might be coming to an end toward the end of the 2018 season. But Lee expressed interest in playing again, and the team is willing to make it happen. Lee has been unable to stay on the field the past few years, as he’s dealt with recurring hamstring issues and other ailments.
Moore thinks the incentive-heavy deal the Cowboys just gave Jason Witten will “provide a template” for the deal Lee will get once his contract is restructured. Lee was schedule to make a non-guaranteed $7MM this season, which was always going to be untenable.
Lee saw his playing time scaled back dramatically this season even when he was healthy, as rookie Leighton Vander Esch emerged. Lee has spent all nine years of his career with Dallas, and will be making it a tenth now. He’ll likely function as somewhat of a player-coach in a veteran mentor role for the 2019 season.
Sean Lee is the greatest cowboy ever that has not played a full 16 game season schedule. He has missed games due to injury every year. Thats his legend.
Great call, the “Legend” bar is mighty low these days….
For as much press as this walking IR player gets I just don’t see it. I don’t watch the Cowboys much unless they are playing the Hawk’s or a night game but when I watch them I see a guy who is OK but not even close to the top. He couldn’t carry Wagner’s jock strap. I know I will get a lot of blow back from cowboy fans but you all watch the game with blinders on. Do you truly believe he is better than Vander what ever? Even in his prime? He will probably get a concussion watching the game holding his helmet.
No one is calling him the best best.. lol! Even at his peak he was just “under rated”.. he has a nose for the ball and makes a lot of plays but no one confused him with the truly elites of a the game. He was always in the “next”tier or even one step lower than that..
Compass, like you said, you don’t watch many Cowboys games. Lee is hardly just OK, he is a great LB. Yes, he can’t stay healthy, but he was top tier when he was on the field. For years, the Cowboys defense would be exposed as merely pedestrian when Lee missed games.
Now the Cowboys are blessed with two top LBs in LVE and Jaylon Smith, but that doesn’t diminish what Lee did in past seasons. There are teams that don’t have any LBs as good as any of these 3 (looking at you NYG).
Who is calling this dude a cowboy legend? It’s like TMZ claiming David Irving is an NFL star that quit. Nah bro, this dude had a good couple years but could never stay on the field.
Cowboys
