The NFL salary cap for 2019 has been officially set at $188.2MM, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). That marks an increase of $11MM from last year’s figure of $177.2MM.
This is the sixth consecutive year in which the cap has gone up at least $10MM per club. It’s a sign of continued success and increased revenue for the league, though the final mark is a bit shy of some projections.
In December, the NFL told teams that the final cap would fall somewhere between $187-$191MM. The free spending of clubs has led some to speculate that the cap would fall no lower than $190MM, but ultimately, it doesn’t make a huge difference – revenue is up, the cap is up, and teams like the Colts and Jets have serious money to burn.
Free agency begins on March 13, but a good chunk of the league’s cap space will be absorbed by extensions between now and then.
9ers got a good amount of cap space. They better make some moves this off season. Need some good players. Need depth. All the injuries killed them last year and because they are rebuilding and so young they didn’t have the depth to get through it. If they spend on some good free agents and draft well they could have a really good good year.
I still don’t understand how come extensions are so prominent in the NFL. Almost nobody makes it to free agency.
It’s more difficult to learn a new system maybe?
What I don’t get is why did the NFLPA agree to letting teams tag players 3 times before hitting free agency if they can’t come to terms on a deal. One tag, yea I can understand that but even two seems a bit much although I think it’s not completely over kill, but 3, that’s extreme. You’d think they’d try get rid of that in the next agreement between the NFL and NFLPA. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe they don’t but it seems like players don’t really like the tag at all so why not push to get it to only one or two tags permitted instead of 3? Anyone else feel that would be fair?
The union needs to get rid of the 5th year option for 1st rounders and the 2nd franchise tag. The players need to wise up and start taking the short term guaranteed deals… good example is Zeke Elliott. Tag him 3 times and then let him walk as a FA at the age of 29. Assuming he stays healthy. No team will pay big bucks for a 29 year old RB. And Zeke can’t get to a FA deal (although he would make close to $90MM by age 29, so it’s hard for me to say he didn’t “get paid” in FA.
Yea I agree with you completely. They need to put their foot down and get rid of those things in the next contract.
The whole tag system is unfair guys should have the ability at some point to make the decision to play WHERE they want.
Agreed
I agree. Some guys don’t want to stay with who they are with yet get tagged. I don’t think there should be a tag. Let them have the choose of staying or going
