Now that the Raiders have agreed to acquire Antonio Brown from the Steelers, you can be sure that more news about the deal (and the deals that were discussed, but never came to be), will be trickling in. We will monitor the AB fallout here throughout the course of the day, as the football world continues to process the conclusion of the biggest storyline of the offseason:
- The Eagles did discuss Brown with the Steelers, but as ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets, those talks never got serious. Instead, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh were simply doing their due diligence.
- Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP.com suggests it was the new contract that Brown was demanding, rather than the draft picks, that scared the Eagles away (Twitter link).
- Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter) agrees with Shorr-Parks’ theory, saying that plenty of teams were willing to give up the third- and fifth-round picks that ultimately got the job done, but the Raiders were the only team that was willing to tear up Brown’s existing contract and give him a new one.
- Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports tweets that the Bills were willing to swap 2019 first-round picks with the Steelers (No. 9 for No. 20) and trade away two mid-round picks, but it was Brown’s contract demands that proved to be the undoing of that potential deal.
- La Canfora adds in a separate tweet that the Redskins were still engaged with the Steelers after the Bills deal fell through earlier in the week, but it is unclear how serious the Pittsburgh-Washington talks became.
- Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com concedes that the Raiders easily got the better of the Steelers in this trade, but he reviews what Pittsburgh’s options were, and none of them were good (Twitter link). The Steelers could have cut Brown and received no trade compensation — which also would have allowed Brown to sign with any team he wanted, including a major conference rival — or they could have kept him, fined him when he didn’t report to camp, and hoped that he wouldn’t retire because he would have had to pay back $11MM if he did so.
- Fowler also passes along a couple of Raiders-related notes in a separate tweet. A source close to Brown said the wideout was excited about joining the Raiders in part because of the presence of head coach Jon Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr. Brown is also intrigued by the Raiders’ collection of high draft picks and young talent, and Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther — who had to devise many a game plan for Brown when he was the Bengals’ DC — strongly endorsed Brown’s game.
- Plenty of people have been wondering why the Steelers didn’t demand one of the Raiders‘ three first-round draft picks before agreeing to deal Brown to Oakland, and NFL Insider Adam Caplan says the Raiders simply refused to do so (Twitter link). Although the Raiders would of course have preferred to give up one draft choice instead of two, the club was adamant about holding onto its three first-rounders and one second-rounder.
- Although the Steelers‘ $21.12MM cap hit that they will have to absorb for Brown in 2019 is a killer, the trade does save the club $15MM in cash that can now be spent on other players, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk observes.
- Brown’s contract with the Raiders has set a new benchmark for players like Julio Jones, Tyreek Hill, and Michael Thomas, who will all cash in shortly.
- Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com takes an excellent in-depth look at the saga and what it means for both teams.
Addition by subtraction.
Ignorant comment.
Not really. I agree. Get the clown out of Pgh.
I agree too. Goodbye, Mr Big Pest.
It’s you who is ignorant if you don’t realize chemistry matters. I wouldn’t want him on my team either
They will definitely be subrtracting to 6-10
Just about where Mr. Brown’s Raiders will be.
Addition by addition. Win Win Win for all parties involved.
I obviously do not understand the salary cap. Why are the Steelers still being hit if he is no longer on their team? Is that from a signing bonus that now has to be put into 1 year since it cannot be spread out for the length of the contract, since he is not there?
Yes, that is why.
That’s because the Steelers refuse to guarantee any contract longer then 1 year. It’s the main reason why Brown and Bell wanted out of Pittsburgh. Even Little Ben doesn’t get a contract with guaranteed length.
The only “Fallout” I see is that Brown made the Steelers look like chumps, again.
Made them look like chumps? His ego is the the chump now, putting up incredible numbers but only worth a 3rd and 5th round pick? That’s gotta sting knowing bad players have been traded for far more.
To your point: Steelers got a 3rd for Martavis B.
Brown could care less what he got traded for. All he cares about is that:
1) He is no longer on the Steelers
2) He got a new contract that pays him even more money than his once record contract with Pitt paid him
He’s probably happy that it only cost Oakland a 3rd & 5th as they can use their multiple first and second rounders to improve the team.
He’s glad the Stealers (get it?) only got two low picks for him. It’s called spite.
Hit really hard a few times coming across the middle next time they play. Old school. It’s all about ego and money… Such short careers and need to make the cash when then can. Give me a break. Try working in a coal mine your whole life or define your country and these “elite” athletes make more in a half a season than these people make in a lifetime. I love sports but, out priorities are way out of wack!!
You know WHY they make all of that money? Because they have SPECIAL skills that only a select few have. So, they have the OPTION not to have to work in a coal mine. Too bad you have no idea of how supply and demand work.
More skill than a Navy Seal? Compare a Navy Seal’s compensation to that of one of your special skill athletes. Good luck with AB protecting you. Spend a week working in a coal mine or military combat and you may feel different about “special skills” and options.
And he just got farther away from the playoffs.
So when you players claim they carry that chip on their shoulder for dropping in the draft they don’t care what draft pick they get traded for? LOL!
If he was the 20th highest paid WR, he’d probably care about what it took to trade for him. But that new contract is his value now; not the 3 and 5 it took to acquire him.
He got all his guaranteed money from his deal with the Steelers, then got to add another $30 million in guarantees on top three years before the contract expired AND updated his AAV to being the highest paid WR in the NFL this year. I’m sure he’s real broken up about his old team that he now hates not getting a first round pick for him though …
Shows what they were willing to pay to remove cancer
Can’t wait to see AB and Gruden screaming at each other on the sidelines.
Mister bug pampers and gruden should be fun not like tomlin using kid gloves on pampers
Meant big pampers lol
The Raiders basically traded Amari Cooper, a 3rd, & a 5th for AB & a 1st.
Winning!
Good point.
Mack, Cooper, 3rd & 5th for AB and two 1st rounders.
The past is in the past, move on from this major problem
Guess I’ll hold onto Brown’s jersey until he is elected into the Hall of Fame. Only question is, does he play Lon enough and collect enough counting stats to go in as a Raider (or other team)???
Can you imagine Antonio Brown in Las Vegas? Too bad HBO cancelled its Cathouse series…I have a feeling that AB would have been a regular on that show ;-).
Why would you think that cause your stupid maybe AB is the hardest working guy in NFL what would make you think he would be at a Cathouse ?
Maybe he mixed AB up with Kraft!
I don’t hate the Raiders, but unless they plan on throwing every pass to Brown, no matter what, they will hear his complaining mouth about 6 weeks into the next season. Especially, if they have a losing record.
Lol the players options are to just retire or hold out. Since contracts for teams are written on toilet paper, players should be able to walk away when they want to as well free and clear. Team signing them takes on half the dead money.
I’m just happy that my Browns no longer have to face him twice every season.
According to Steelers fans, he’s 31 and rapidly going downhill, so you didn’t have much to worry about! LOL
The Browns should be happy they don’t have to face AB as much. AB curb stomped one of their punters skull in. That’s terrifying!
I remember that one. Ouch.
Where are all the people who said the Steelrs dont have to trade him or AB has no leverage LOL
EXACTLY! He Went from ZERO guaranteed money to 30mil. They really showed him.
That’s how badly the Steelers wanted to get rid of him, genius. Yep, he got paid. And he also just got a lot farther away from the playoffs.
LMAO!! I hope you don’t Don’t Get dizzy in that SPIN machine you’re rolling in. I’m sure it sounded good when typed it.
Do they measure the distance of how far you missed the playoffs? Did the Steelers get xtra credit for only missing it a 1/2 game??
Hold up. Forget it’s Brown for a second and it’s you that is the free agent. You’re going to tell me that if the highest $$$ contract you could get were from the Steelers and the Raiders, as they’re currently constructed, and the money was equal and your deciding factor was which one is closer to being a playoff contender, you would pick the Raiders?
Nice try though.
The cap hit is a killer this year, but it will be gone next year. By that point, Rudolph might be ready to take over for Big Ben and another 23 MM or so comes off the books (don’t have Ben’s exact cap figure available right now). Combine that with the 14MM saved from Bell this year and that should go a long way to getting anyone they want locked up long term. Plus, next year they might even be able to play in the free agency pool for a change.
You didn’t get the memo? Ben’s about to sign another extension in the coming weeks.
the 21 million the Steelers have to pay in dead money is that taken out of diva browns new contract?
no, it goes into diva Browns pockets
merry xmass raider nation. now go get a gadget receiver and draft a new offensive line. maybe .500 next yr??
I don’t think Browns agent will have any trouble attracting new clients. He did a masterful job of getting his guy out of a messy situation with one team and scoring a new contract from the new team. Definitely earned the commission he will be getting as a result. Maybe Dez Bryant should give this guy a call.
I agree. I honestly don’t think AB was ever that angry with Pittsburgh. It was just a ploy his agent and him came up with to get more $. That is why he wanted control over the situation from the beginning. He does not care about the winning or who the QB really is, he wanted the $. He would gladly be in Buffalo right now if they would have acquiescenced to his contract demands. Got to give Rosenhaus and him credit for pulling this off, and Pittsburgh for being beyond utterly stupid enough to ablige.
Brown has his flaws. But it’s amazing how little blame Ben gets. Do people actually listen to his weekly radio show? All he does is talk s*it about his teammates.
This is the oldest incorrect storyline of the AB story. Have you actually ever listened to his radio show? Or are you just regurgitating what you’ve read other people falsely generalize?
Spot on. Meanwhile pouncey has said he’s retiring when Ben does
So basically Oakland swapped Amari Cooper for Antonio Brown, received a 1st, and lost a 3rd and 5th.
And the Rotten Raiders will be as lousy as they were last year under that over-rated head coach, crummy Gruden. I live in La Vegas and there is very little support for the Rotten Raiders beyond the city and county officials. Most people who I know will go see a game in the new (but how well built?) stadium only want to see their favorite team destroy the Raiders. For me that would be the Bears (whose offense will be very poor next year). I, along with others, have bet that the Rotten Raiders will be gone within 10 years since Vegas loves winners and hates losers (UNLV basketball begs people on the radio to come and see games so recruits do not know how little UNLV basketball is supported now that they are losers). The Raiders will be losers for the duration of Crummy Grudens ridiculous contract……Maybe we will be lucky in Vegas and the stadium will fall apart before opening day so the Raiders have to stay in Oakland where they belong.
I would have preferred the Bill’s 9th overall draft pick and secure a top flight CB or LB. Still amazed that contracts in sports mean so much different than in any other business. We have men and women defending our liberty and freedoms in the military and armed forces put their life on the line daily. Most do it for pride and loyalty. Most won’t make in a lifetime what some of these poor elite athletes that only have a few years to make in a half a season what others can’t make in a lifetime. Give me a break!!I love sports but, maybe our current compensation priorities are a bit out of line. We are paying the wrong people the big money in my opinion.
I hear you buddy but when thousands of people are paying hundreds of dollars to see them work after paying hundreds of dollars on a replica uniform then maybe it would work.
