We heard a couple of weeks ago that Earl Thomas could get priced out of the Cowboys’ range, even though there’s been a long-rumored connection between the two sides. But Dallas apparently hasn’t been scared off by Thomas’ asking price and will make a “strong push” for the safety when free agency opens, according to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.
The latest word is that Thomas is seeking a deal that will pay him around $13MM annually. Thomas is from Texas and played his college ball for the Texas Longhorns, and it hasn’t been much of a secret that he’s interested in returning home. Thomas wants to become the highest paid safety in the game, and Moore writes that the Cowboys “regard Thomas as a special talent.” He also notes that they aren’t concerned about his age, Thomas will be 30 in May, and that they “will make a competitive offer” for his services.
We heard more confirmation earlier today that numerous teams will be interested in signing Thomas, so the Cowboys won’t have it easy. The 49ers are expected to be aggressive in pursuing the All-Pro as are the Chiefs, who attempted to trade for him last fall. Thomas has indicated he won’t be giving the Cowboys much of a hometown discount, but it sounds like they’re willing to match, or at least come close to, what other teams are offering.
Thomas played in just four games last season before a leg injury landed him on injured reserve, but he’ll be fully recovered by the time the 2019 season rolls around. The six-time Pro Bowler would be a massive addition to the Cowboys’ already promising defense.
mistake

As a cowboys fan I hope they go bargain shopping instead. Shopping at the top of the free agent market typically ends poorly
there is at least 6 quality and an upgrade to our current safeties that can be signed for less and also give us more flexibility to sign a FA dt or de
Unless it’s Collins they shouldn’t break the bank on a safety. They should just look early on the draft for one. Thomas was the best. But he’s been hurt the last couple years. Y pay a guy 13m who can’t stay on the field
Unless it’s Collins? You’re joking right? Collins is an “in the box” safety with poor coverage skills, the NFL is now a passing league. There’s a reason NYG is letting him walk, and in case you didn’t get the memo Dallas doesn’t have an “early pick” because it was traded to Oakland. ET can take Dallas D to the next level, HOF caliber safeties don’t become available often and I’m hopeful they can sign him to a 3-4 year deal loaded with incentives.
ET four years ago yes, give me Collins now
Bingo! This guy gets it
JJG
Unless its Collins? You are kidding right? Collins is an in the box safety with poor coverage skills, the NFL is a passing league. Why do you think NYG is letting him walk out the door? Dallas can’t look “early on the draft” for a safety. Not sure if you’re paying attention but they traded their “early” pick for Cooper. I’m hopeful Jerrah gets a clue, trades Lawrence,
recoups a 1st round pick, drafts DL and uses the 20M+ Lawrence is looking for to sign ET and (maybe) 2 second tier DL. Dallas already has to pay Prescott, Cooper and Zeke soon, and can’t pay Lawrence an Aaron Donald type deal and manage the cap. Load Thomas contact with incentives and if he hits them he’s worth every penny of 13M for 3-4 years. If Dallas needs to blitz a little more often to generate pressure so be it, they’d have the best deep safety in the NFL.
Trade Lawrence? You’re joking right? The NFL is a passing league and you’re going to trade away the only legitimate pass rusher the Cowboys have. Randy Gregory is suspended yet again, so what other pass rushers would be on your roster Jimmah? You pay your QB, LT, pass rushing DE, CB, WR, and THEN your FS. If the opposing QB has all day to pass it doesn’t matter if you have a HOF FS, you can’t cover forever.
Suprised at the photo choice
Jerry gets enamored by Texas players. Too old to offer that much more money.
You’re spot on. Jerry runs the team like someone playing fantasy football. He gets excited about the ‘name’ on the back of the jersey. Meanwhile the teams winning the Super Bowls are combing through all the available options to get the highest ROI for the ‘team name’ on the front of the jersey.
No safety is worth 13 million per year.
So we sign Earl Thomas and let Byron Jones walk? I’m not sure about this.
