The Cowboys are set to acquire pass-rusher Robert Quinn from the Dolphins, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). The Dolphins will receive a 2020 sixth-rounder in return, tweets ESPN’s Todd Archer.
The Saints also showed interest in Quinn, but he’ll take his talents to Dallas instead. He’ll receive a new one-year deal, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (Twitter link). Calvin Watkins of The Athletic tweets that the deal will reduce Quinn’s salary from $11.1MM to $8MM. The Dolphins also picked up the veteran’s $1.12MM roster bonus, according to Albert Breer (via Twitter).
The Cowboys tagged Demarcus Lawrence earlier this month, but the star edge defender has said in the past that he will not sign a one-year tender. Lawrence also recently upped his asking price, which further complicates matters. Meanwhile, Randy Gregory and David Irving have both been hit with indefinite suspensions, so the Cowboys badly needed someone like Quinn on the D-Line.
In 2013, Quinn earned All-Pro acclaim with 19 sacks and seven forced fumbles. He hasn’t matched that level of production in recent years, though Quinn still has a respectable 15 sacks combined over the last two seasons. He did his best work in a 4-3 scheme, so there’s reason to believe that he can thrive in Dallas.
Quinn’s 6.5 sacks in 2018 weren’t a head-turner, but he did tie for 20th among DEs with 24 quarterback hits. Pro Football Focus, meanwhile, assigned Quinn the 19th-highest pass-rush grade among 103 qualifying edge rushers. Quinn is still only entering his age-29 campaign, so he’s a player that could be in the Cowboys’ plans for years to come.
I like this move. Ive been saying for years now that, although Tank is good, he’s not worth top DE $. Hopefully they can use this acquisition to help lower his cap hit.
Nice acquisition assuming they didn’t give up too much for him.
I beg to differ on Tank’s value…name another DE who tallied 25 or more sacks in the last 2 seasons…Cameron Jordan, Chandler Jones and Tank. He’s worth top DE money, whatever that is…his franchise number is $17.5/year…I’d say give him $19 and let’s go.
I think they upped their offer to his original ask of 20/year and tank countered with 22.5 out of the blue. It seems like a mess, but I wouldn’t pay him that. Don’t ask me, though…I play madden on rookie and think try to convince myself I’m awesome at it.
Thumbs up for the madden comment.
Maddon rookie baby! Only way to play .
He’s asking for 22.5 he wants to be closer to donald and Mack level. His production is not close to their numbers. Sorry to say but I think he’s pricing himself out of Dallas. Plus the fact he needs surgery and hasn’t gotten yet just spells trouble if we over pay him
he already is unhappy with 20.5 as the taf has and already turned down 21 from the cowboys…he isnt mack or donald…
Lawrence has been in the league 5 seasons not 2, his supporters conveniently forget that. 5 seasons 34 sacks, Aaron Donald 5 seasons 59.5 sacks and Mack 5 seasons 53 sacks. Lawrence isn’t the same level as these guys. He’s a tier below and not worth 20M per.
Just like you failed to to mention he’s only been a full time starter for 2yrs. Also, he’s only started 47 of the 64 games played. So, his supporters aren’t the only ones with selective counting ability
He missed those games because of injuries
All the more reasons Dallas would be crazy to pay this guy over 20M. You strengthened my argument. Thanks Troll Smasher
Bye Tank
I wouldn’t go past $20MM/yr for Lawrence. He’s really good, $20MM/year indicates as such, but he’s no Mack or Donald.
This guy was only worth a 6th rounder? Wow.
