The Cowboys recently stepped up their offer to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to meet his $20MM asking price. But, as Marlo Stanfield once famously said in “The Wire,” the price of the brick is going up.
In the last few weeks, Lawrence has gone from asking for $20MM/year to $22.5MM per annum, according to Calvin Watkins of The Athletic. The Cowboys’ current offer would make Lawrence the league’s highest-paid 4-3 defensive end, but the pass rusher is looking to match the $22.5MM AAV on Aaron Donald‘s deal and inch towards the $23.5MM per year earned by Khalil Mack.
Lawrence, 27 in April, is already the highest-paid 4-3 defensive end in the NFL thanks to his $20.5MM franchise tag. However, he has indicated that he won’t report to the club until he gets a new deal.
This is shaping up to be a challenging negotiation for the Cowboys, but that’s nothing new for owner Jerry Jones.
“This has gone on as far back for me, notably, with Emmitt Smith,” Jones said. “Any of you know my relationship with Emmitt Smith today know that’s a memory we smile about the way we are, 20-something years later and we’re in business together. That’s just part of the business. The main thing, and I don’t want to be cavalier, this is a significant thing for not only our franchise but DeMarcus’ life. It would make anyone be very, very judicious as they are working through the terms of this agreement.”
Trade him don’t need greediness
trade for quinn, probably get him for a 4th or be patient and he will be released and tell tank keep his needs as he is a far cry from either donald or mack! trade him for a late 1st and a 3rd
What drug are you on you think Lawrence can get a 1st and 3rd when Dee Ford only got a 2nd? Ford is a couple years older but the past 2-3 seasons the sack total is near identical, Lawrence also wants 5.5M per year more than what Ford got. I can see a 1st but not a 3rd too.
Lawrence younger and better than Ford.
Drug? Tank is a much better pash rusher and run defender than Ford. If I were the Cowboys brass I would explore trading Lawrence for sure.
I admitted Ford is older, you didn’t look at their stats did you? Ford 30.5 career sacks Lawrence 34.0 sacks Ford 36 TFL, Lawrence 48, Ford 69 QB hits Lawrence 67. Lmao Lawrence is definitely not much better than Ford especially not 5.5M better
So Lawrence has 33% more TFLs and 50% more tackles, while still managing to have more sacks and QB hits in less games playing as a strong-side DE in a 4-3 as opposed to a ROLB in a 3-4. If you don’t think it’s worth the money, okay, but Lawrence is younger and better across the board and lightyears better in some categories.
@benster04
You got it right. The Cowboys are trading for Quinn. I guess Lawrence is going to be ex-Cowboy real soon.
Man, that analogy was rough.
Feeling the cap crunch Dallas? Hard to have that highly paid DE with the Cooper extension coming.
Sincerely,
Jon Gruden
Bro, you are not Aaron Donald.
Compared to Aaron Donald, Lawrence isn’t even Donald Duck.
Maybe Jerraa can get him some commercials with HEB like Emmitt had! Extra bling…..
For that kind of dough he should hold ole “ Jerra’s” hankey while he picks his nose on live TV.
Perhaps the shoulder injury Lawrence suffered has migrated to his brain. Jerry isn’t someone you can bluff easily as Dez found out the hard way. Dallas isn’t exactly facing the NFLs most elite QBs in their division so Lawrence may be overestimating the Cowboys need for a premier pass rusher.
Increases the odds hes not on the roster this year.
It’s all about the guaranteed money and not the AAV. If Dallas offers him 5/$100 with $70M – $80M guaranteed, he signs that deal tomorrow. If they offer him 5/$115M but with only $45M – $50M guaranteed he probably won’t sign that deal.
