The Cowboys will exercise the 2019 option on Allen Hurns‘ contract on Friday, a source tells Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Per the terms of his deal, Hurns can make up to $6MM and will earn a base salary of $4MM. Word of Hurns’ option being exercised was first passed along by Mike Fisher of 24/7 Sports (on Twitter).
Hurns signed a two-year, $12MM deal with the Cowboys last March, but was unable to establish himself in Dallas’ offense. He initially looked like he might be the team’s number one receiver after Dez Bryant was cut, but ended up catching just 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season. Then, Hurns suffered a dislocated ankle just minutes into the Cowboys’ wild card playoff game against the Seahawks. Unfortunately, it was one of those ugly injuries that non-doctors could immediately diagnose as a season-ender.
Fortunately, Hurns has resumed working out at the Cowboys’ facility, so he should be on track to play in 2019. If he’s able to get back to his old form, the Cowboys could have a very potent passing attack between him and WR1 Amari Cooper.
Why? Gallup is better than him. Too expensive for a 3rd stringer in a run first offense.
Still better than paying max money for slot. And you can run with him in the slot. Better blocker than Beasley, DJax, or many other more expensive slot WRs. 4mil for a guy that knows the offense already? Seems logical.
I was going to agree with the OP but then I read this comment. $4M seems rich for Hurns but FA WR prices are going to be ridic.
Exactly. Nothing against Gallup at all. He is going to be a stud opposite from Cooper. Like he said, it’s a run first team. Save that money for Zeke and Dak.
Draft a slot.
It’s not clear to me what the significance of the option is that they just picked up. I can’t find anything about a roster bonus that’s effective on March 13th. So does his base salary become guaranteed on March 13th, or is it still not guaranteed until the Tuesday of Week 1 of the regular season like anyone other veteran on the second year of a 2-year deal? If the latter, there’s no real significance to March 13th and the news seems is effectively nothing more than “The Cowboys haven’t cut Allen Hurns yet.”
And if that’s the case, there’s no harm in keeping him around through the offseason. The Cowboys already resigned Austin, and they’ll have a chance to sign Randall Cobb, draft a Penny Hart type in the draft, see how Brown and Cedrick Wilson have progressed in camp, make sure no major injuries happen in the offseason, but if several of those things fall through, he could slip onto the roster.
I like this. I love Beasley, but if he wants 20m guaranteed we need to find someone else. Let Hurns start day 1 of training camp fighting for that slot position. The team can focus on that knowing Cooper and Gallup will line up on the outsides. Don’t waste any time trying to put Hurns on the outside.
Hopefully his foot faces forward now.
With Beas wanting 20 mil guaranteed this is an easy move.
This is stupid! He sucked before he had a horrific looking leg injury. Draft and rookie and save 4-5 million. It’s an expensive insurance policy they just bought.. the guy can’t play.. smh
TF??? He is done.
I wonder if that base salary is guaranteed. if they did cut him in camp or preseason, I wonder how it would affect the cap.
