The Bears are replacing the recently-departed Adrian Amos with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). It will be a one-year deal for Clinton-Dix, who comes back to the NFC North after a brief hiatus in Washington. Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network tweets that Clinton-Dix will earn $3.5MM in 2019.
We learned yesterday that Clinton-Dix would be meeting with Chicago, and that visit apparently well for both sides. Although he is not as physical as Amos, who signed with the division-rival Packers (Clinton-Dix’s original team), Clinton-Dix does offer arguably better coverage ability. His skill-set is somewhat similar to that of new teammate and fellow safety Eddie Jackson, but the Bears, who boast one of the best overall defenses in the league, should be able to make it work.
The Redskins picked up Clinton-Dix from the Packers at the 2018 trade deadline in exchange for a fourth-round pick. In nine games in the nation’s capital, Clinton-Dix posted 66 tackles, three passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. All told, Pro Football Focus graded him as the league’s No. 17 safety last season.
Washington wanted him back, but the prospect of suiting up for a more legitimate contender and for a better defensive unit was the deciding factor. Indeed, Garafolo says that Clinton-Dix turned down more money “elsewhere” to play for Chicago and to reunite with Jackson, his former teammate at Alabama (it is unclear whether the Redskins’ offer was higher than the Bears’ proposal, but at least one team was offering more than $3.5MM).
Net gain for the Packers from a year ago.
Amos was the 11th best defender last year. 12th if you include Callahan. Great against the run, will not cause turnovers or intercept passes. Needs an all-pro free safety to help him. Good player nit worthy of his contract, but when your desperate you take what you can get. Just like all of the other players the Packers signed.
Kinda like the bears are desperate on offense so they overpaid for Robinson or?
Lol we paid 3.5 for Haha you paid Amos 21 guaranteed ? He was probably the 10th best player on our defense. Oh ya and he can’t catch. Enjoy man
Ma Ha, Ah Ha.
“You like to speak dat?”
“I like to talk dat”
Classic Stooges…
Thanks for getting it.
Absolutely. Great post.
nice
I am okay with this pick up. Not over joyed, but okay. He may be able to help more in the secondary than Amos, but his tackling will need some work.
It’s only a 1 year deal. Make it or brake it year for him. We also have a defensive coordinator who knows how to fix dbs
Sorry but this guy is a quitter and non-competitive. Bears fans will immediately hate watching him with his mouth guard flapping around not tackling anyone.
Maybe his name should be changed to Boo-Hoo Clinton-Sux.
Jackson had moments of that last year which concerned me, but when he was on he was a catalyst for explosive plays. We will see if the duo can play well together and Pagano can keep HaHa focused.
that is why I am cauctiously optimistic. Pagano and Jackson may get more out of him, but we will see.
HaHa Clinton-Dix chose the Bears over the Redskins as his hope is that as a Bear he won’t have to do any tackling (i.e. the defense is so stacked the play won’t get to him).
His tackling was awful in DC last year. Refused to take ball carriers on head-on, HaHa was dragged five or six yards every time he was the primary tackler.
Great value, won’t take a lot of cap space. I’ve always liked him, anxious to see him play next to Eddie Jackson. Especially w/ Baltimore losing so many key defensive pieces, the Bears will have the best D in football. Now if Pace could sign a good kicker (Gostkowski?) I’ll be really happy w/ this offseason.
Sorry man but he’s awful. Completely unwilling tackler.
I hate it when kickers can’t tackle. haha. jk.
He missed 8 tackles last year. Amos missed 9.
Will be interesting to see how well the reunion of Alabama safeties plays out. I’m optimistic this is a good value for the Bears. A very reasonable one year commitment. If Pace adds more safety depth via the draft too… then overall the Bears should save a lot of money as compared to what keeping Amos would have cost… with very little drop off, if any.
Ha Ha Clinton Lost
Welcome back to the Norris division
HahaHAHAHA. just when I think you can’t possibly get any dumber, you go and do something like this…AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!
Rodgers has to like this signing.
Dude HHCD sucked last year. He will probably be decent for CHI just because he’s surrounded by so much talent, but he is a coward. Shy about contact (see Amari Cooper’s 80 YAC after a HHCD whiff) and only interested in stats that get him paid. Not a team guy.
