It sounds like Jordan Howard‘s time in Chicago could be coming to an end. The Bears are having trade discussions surrounding the young running back, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Schefter writes that “multiple teams” approached the Bears at the combine about trading for Howard, and that discussions are “ongoing.” There was trade speculation about Howard around this time last year, but the Bears ultimately shot down those rumors and said they were going to make Howard the “main guy” in their backfield. After another disappointing season, they’ve apparently changed their tune.
We heard last week that the Bears were shopping Howard, and it sounds like they’ve got some serious interest. Howard matched his career high with nine rushing touchdowns last season, but he wasn’t very efficient. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry, down from 4.1 the year before. Neither number was anywhere near as good as his rookie season, when he averaged 5.2 yards per tote.
Howard was a fifth round pick in 2016, and immediately burst onto the scene as a rookie. He finished second in the NFL in rushing that year, and made the Pro Bowl. But he’s steadily declined since, and the Bears are looking to move in a different direction. Howard is heading into the final year of his rookie deal, and the team wants to get something back while they still can. Tarik Cohen, who has split time with Howard the past couple of seasons, isn’t really an every down back, so the Bears will certainly add some running back help at some point if they do trade Howard.
Bucs or 49ers.
As a 9ers fan I’m good with the backs we have so I hope they save the draft pick and don’t make that trade.
Why would the 49ers do that when they have a two soild backs.
Yea exactly. McKinnon and Brieda are better.
Both are injury prone
And entirely different kind of backs. Mix Howard in with McKinnon and Brieda and that would be dangerous.
I agree with bucs, but no 9ers because they got brieda
E-A-G-L-E-S 4th rounder gets it done
Behind the cowboys the eagles definitely have the second most annoying fan base
Good back, but not a good fit for Nagy’s system. I wish him well and hope the Bears get a decent pick for him.
Eagles
Maybe the steelers and bears can find a way to get a trade done involving antonio brown and jordan howard.
Maybe bears get Antonio Brown to be Trubinsky’s #1 weapon
Steelers get Jordan Howard and a 3rd and 4th round pick. Replaces bell and nets them two draft picks.
Bears don’t have the cap space
or the draft capital to just give away.
Steelers are set with Conner
It’s *Trubisky* why the hell does everyone add an N to his name
Oakland should be all over this
I hope not. He already has 3 yrs of 250 carries each so you could say that’s high mileage for a 24 yr old back. Being a former late round pick, I think that means he only has 1 more yr before hitting free agency and looking to get paid. And, his avg yrd/carry has dropped all three yrs. Basically, I’d rather the Raiders draft a young RB in the 3rd or 4th round than take on a declining back.
I get that he doesn’t fit Nagy’s system but this feels like when the Bears traded Olsen because he didn’t fit Martz’s system. Maybe adjusting the system a bit to fit in a stud player instead of trading him away and relying on a gimmick back in Cohen and hoping to find someone in the draft.
I get what you’re saying but Cohen is not a “gimmick” back. It’s the new norm. Howard is not fast and is a marginal receiver at best. Nagy is not gonna take a step back in his system, (although he did admit to abandoning the run til mid-season). He has to find a guy who has power between the tackles and can be an effective route runner. That’s not Howard.
He’s gimmick back, he’s most efficient being used 10-13 times a game and saw his effectiveness fall off a cliff towards the end of the season when they were getting him the ball more often. Based on how the season went on and how the offense completely faltered towards the end of the season when they stopped pounding the ball up the middle with Howard proved how valuable he is and how Nagy’s system needs tweaking.
Jets for a third round pick (either jets or new Orleans pick) for Howard.
Jets get the rb they need without having to pay bell and can then use money saved to bring in two or three of the top offensive lineman.
I think Howard is going to the Jets, Gase is the head coach and what’s his name is the O. Coordinator, which happens to be the last two O. Coordinators for the Bears before Nagy. Howard had his best year(s) with them calling plays. I have a feeling the Bears are going to go after Tevin Coleman to be their featured back
Texans
Bears will be lucky to get a 4th for him.. last year of deal and declining production. I’m thinking 5th rd
