Kwon Alexander is spoken for. On Monday, the 49ers signed the former Buccaneers linebacker to a four-year, $54MM deal (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com). The pact includes $27MM guaranteed, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter) adds.
John Lynch, who knows a thing or two about the Buccaneers’ organization, is investing big in the linebacker position. Alexander was expected to cash in this offseason, but few could have foreseen this type of deal for a player coming off of a torn ACL.
The Bucs discussed an extension with Alexander last year before his ACL tear in October, but they were unwilling to break the $10MM/year mark for him. Months later, the 49ers have shelled out $13.5MM per season for the soon-to-be 25-year-old.
A fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft, Alexander started 46 games over three-plus years with the Buccaneers. Last season, he posted 38 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one sack while grading as the No. 53 linebacker at the time of his injury, per Pro Football Focus. In 2017, Alexander earned his first career Pro Bowl selection and graded out as PFF’s No. 37 off-ball ‘backer. In 2016, he registered an eye-popping 145 stops.
Previously, the 49ers were looking into inside linebackers such as C.J. Mosley and Anthony Barr. In all likelihood, the Alexander signing will take them out of the mix for both players.
When did he suffer the ACL injury? Will he start the season on the active roster? That’s a lot of money for someone coming off an injury like that if he isn’t ready for the start of season and as we saw with Bowman, who was one of best LB in the game, a ACL injury is hard to come back from fully. Hope this works out, need help at that position. Feel like there was better options but I’m not fully aware of how healthy he is or will be start of the season so maybe there’s something they know.
He got it in October so early in the season. So he probably be ready by season if not sooner
Thank you. That clears up a lot for me. The full report wasn’t out when I commented but now I see more about him and the injury. He could really help the team if healthy. Hopefully he can be ready by the opener or not long after.
I had my ACL replaced 5 years ago and I have no idea how guys can go back to playing professional sports after. I can’t even transfer my full weight to my front leg in my golf swing any more.
Imagine a top doctor, say, Dr. James Andrews fixes you, then imagine you’re paid 13.5 mil to ensure rehab goes a well as possible. And that’s it—you’re one work task. 13.5. You could do it!
It a lot of money for him coming off a injury. But if he can stay healthy plus he young would be a solid get. Now go get Houston, Dee and or Thomas
Would love if they got Ford it Houston. Gotta focus on their defense. If they get one of those guys and still draft Bosa or Allen and sign a Safety like Dixon or Thomas than their D would be really good.
If they sign one or two more guys on d. I wouldn’t be surprised if use the draft to focus on offense
WTH???
Terrible. Hopefully my raiders can sign mosley or barr as we desperately need help there.
This is…uhhh…a massive overpay
