Steelers star wideout Antonio Brown tweeted a farewell to Pittsburgh fans today, which once again worked the football world into a frenzy. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, though, says that outside of the tweet, there have been no major developments in this saga (video link). Indeed, a report earlier this month indicated that Brown had reiterated his prior trade demand, and the substance of that report remains valid. Brown’s camp has not gone back to the Steelers to yet again reaffirm his desire for a fresh start, and the Steelers have still not given Brown and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, permission to seek a trade on their own.
But Brown’s goodbye certainly seems to suggest that there is no going back now, and that Pittsburgh will end up trading him and giving him the fresh start he is seeking (although Rapoport is clear that the Steelers continue to hold all the cards and do not have to cede to Brown’s demands). But assuming the Steelers do end up moving him, what can they expect in return?
The team understandably wants to net at least a first-round draft pick in any Brown trade, but in a separate interview, Rapoport suggests that a second-round pick may be more plausible (video link). After all, the acquiring team would probably need to give Brown a new contract, which will surely be an expensive proposition, and his alleged involvement in a domestic dispute — not to mention the fact that he does not look like a positive clubhouse presence at the moment — could impact the Steelers’ return.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, who describes Brown’s deteriorating relationship with the Steelers in excellent detail, also said Pittsburgh may have to settle for a second- or third-round selection (or even a fourth-rounder, depending on the results of the league’s investigation into the domestic dispute).
Veteran NFL reporter Ed Werder believes the Steelers — assuming they have comparable offers from multiple clubs on the table — will deal Brown to the team that he is least likely to succeed with and that cannot hurt the Steelers, which would be reminiscent of what the Packers did when they traded Brett Favre to the Jets (Twitter link). At the very least, Pittsburgh wants to ship Brown to the NFC, and NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco says that the 49ers — who are apparently Brown’s preferred destination — have internally discussed the idea of acquiring him.
But Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggests (via Twitter) that Brown has not done himself any favors by saying he wants a new deal if traded. As indicated above, his contract demands could scare some teams away, as part of the appeal in trading for Brown is his cap-friendly deal.
One way or another, we should have a resolution by March 17, when Brown is due a $2.5MM roster bonus. If he is still on the Steelers’ roster on March 18, then he is likely to still be on it come Week 1.
And yet Amari cooper was worth a mid level first round pick. Damn it Jerry..
Cooper is younger than Brown
And cheaper
That too
and doesn’t have an attitude problem.
And keeps his mouth shut
And score 15TD’s
And not even close to as good as AB lol
Cooper could not hold Brown’s jock strap so who cares if he is younger. Jerry Jones plays fantasy football. He once gave Detroit a first round WR too. He over pays all the time. Every one wins when they trade with JONES!
Cooper cheaper and like 6 years younger
And he didn’t demand a trade which decreased his value
AB is only 12M/yr for 3 years for the acquiring team.
Very cheap. I don’t believe anyone would feel a need to extend him either, as above mentions.
Mid-level? 27th lol
How can anyone still criticize that trade? Did you not watch any games in the second half of the season?
Of course, Cooper is a terrific wr and tore it up for the Cowboys. In fact, in the 50 plus years I’ve watched the Cowboys I haven’t seen them have a better route runner. However, Cooper can walk away in a mere 16 games and if he doesn’t it will be because the Cowboys provided him with a hefty cap busting contract. With Lawrence, Zeke, Dak, Beasley, Jones and on and on and on in need of new contracts dealing an inexpensive, controllable first round pick was shockingly shortsighted. With the Cowboys under .500 and fans throwing tomatoes at Jones he simply panicked.
Again, Jerry Jones plays fantasy football. No one gives up a 1st round pick for a WR. Jerry does. He did it with Detroit and lost that trade and although Cooper is a good player, any amount of stern negotiations they give up a second round pick. He has no clue what the value of picks are because he greatest evaluator of talent has long since retired. He is an idiot!
Without Cooper they don’t win the division? Probably isn’t even really close. The game against the Hawks didn’t have a clear winner on paper and miracles can happen in a championship game (ask LA). After all said and done I think Jones and Co. made a good move. Not great but good enough to not lose in the trade
There were teams with higher 2nds to offer so Boys had to offer a 1st to get it done.
Just like 9ers, may have to offer 1st if someone else offers even #20 or so overall.
Steelers will get at minimum a mid to high first round pick or they won’t deal him, end of story
Lol
Yeah, they’ll trade him. Whoever has the best offer gets him. Priority to a certain degree for NFC teams. NE could come in w/ a first round offer and Pitt wouldn’t take it.
I was actually thinking about this earlier, really if NE offers their first that’s the best offer the Steelers are gonna get unfortunately the Pats are probably the last team they’ll want to send him to. I’d even be okay with NE sending their 1st and one of their 2nds if that’s what it takes, AB would help contribute to the team right away more than 2 rookies.
Patriots have no room under the cap. Right now they have about $9 mil in space counting their draft pool. And they still need to resign some of their own free agents. Browns cap number this season would be $12.6 mil before an expected new contract that will likely raise that cap number above what Odell Beckham Jr got paid, around $18-19 mil aav in cap costs a season.
I just don’t see the Patriots being able to create enough space to this, even in if Gronk retired.
It not end of story his age and contract teams might not want to deal a first
Ya right lol
Not likely.
Wrong. If the player is demanding a trade and will NOT play for you, they will get a 2nd rounder and possibly a player or a 2nd and a 5th its not a 1st round pick period situation. Its get the best deal possible, trade him out of the AFC. They are such idiots they let BELL walkaway for nothing. The Steelers brass are stupid as hell.
I know the Steelers still have to pay good amount of money even if they trade him but if a team were to offer paying that amount as part of the trade I would think it would sweeten the deal and the Steelers would be willing to part with him for less than a 1st rd pick. Let’s say for example the 9ers offered to pay that 20+ million or whatever it is and include their 2nd rd pick and next years 2nd or 3rd pick I would have to think the Steelers would be intrigued and might take that deal. I’m clearly not a gm and don’t know how that would work out or if the NFL would even allow a deal like that, I know other sports allow deals like that, but it seems like it would work out so I don’t see why they wouldn’t. You see in other sports all the time that trades go through and teams will send money over as part of the deal to compensate.
Even if sending cash was possible, which it is not, that wouldn’t help the steelers. The dead cap space stemming from prorated for cap purposes already paid out signing bonuses & contract restructures, stay with the original team.
Gotcha. That was the part I didn’t understand so thank you for clearing that. I had never heard of nfl teams transferring money like other sports do in trades and didn’t know why or if it was even allowed but now I know they can’t especially in Browns situation. Thank you for cleaning that up. To me that makes it hard to trade him, I personally couldn’t see myself or a team I ran trading a player we had to pay over 20 million for lol.
What’s forgotten here is this is what BROWN wants. They don’t have to trade him. He’s still under contract for a few more years so what is he going to do? Sit out and not get paid till he becomes a FA? The only reason he wants to go to SF is because he wants to start a brand. He wants off the field $$$. I hope the Steelers keep him and let him pout.
I’d like to see that also. What a giant baby. Let him set . End his career.
I suggested on the first article. The 49ers second. Swap thirds and a 4th. 9ers only give up 2 picks. And it gives the Steelers more cost certainty. With the cap hold to trade Brown this year. The second rounder and the extra 4th keeps the coat down and they can still find actual starters with the extra second and the earlier third
Not all that bad of an idea. That 2nd could become more valuable once day 1 is over
Anyone want another prima donna wide receiver? I can’t get that video of Antonio and his teammates making fun of Mike Tomlin when the coach was addressing the team. I think he’s turned into a poison pill…
That’s where all this comes from. AB sees the endorsement money OBJ makes with all the national commercials & sneaker contracts etc.
He sees all of that and says why am I not getting this and I am 10 times better player. He wants his brand more than he wants to win.
The Steelers never get bullied if it doesn’t make sense they won’t make a deal. I don’t care if they pay him to sit at home off principal alone. The lowest I would go is a Top 5 pick in the 2nd round.
I like the idea of trading him to a team he would have a hard time succeeding with.
To think I rode with him in the beginning but for him to demand a trade and say already any team aquiring him he expects a new contract. He is a clown.
Yeah, but he doesn’t have OBJ’s hair.
The entire NFL League should trade for him and then DNQ this Prima Donna. Go away already nobody cares.
Ahhhh Bubba. You care so little that you click on the article, scroll always the way and then post a comment. The irony is….. never mind.
The question is would Brady take a pay cut to accommodate AB? It’s unlikely, but not altogether impossible. If there was one guy being added he’d consider taking a pay cut for at this point, it’d have to be Brown. They could win 2 more with him, even if Brady turns into a potato he could still throw screens to brown with good blocking schemes in front of him and they’d take care of the rest.
Santonio Holmes:
April 12, 2010: Traded by Steelers to Jets for 2010 5th round pick
History about to repeat itself.
Steelers would have a rather short list of teams they would actually consider as trade partners here (AFC teams probably not on list). That limits what they can actually expect in return.
Raiders have 3 first round picks. And when you think about it, Brown is classic Raider player.
This guy is a serious ‘I burger with me sauce’
Steelers aren’t eating that cap money for anything less than a top 5 pick.
bet he end up in dallas
