The Raiders have been heavily connected to Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, but Jon Gruden insists that Derek Carr is still very much in the team’s plans. On Thursday, Gruden reaffirmed his commitment to Carr, just one day after GM Mike Mayock did the same.
“Yes. He’s our franchise quarterback. Let me make that clear,” Gruden said (via PFT).
Carr’s $19.9MM base salary for 2019 became fully guaranteed a few weeks ago. The Raiders could still explore other QB options, of course, but a Carr release is no longer a real possibility.
Gruden’s vote of confidence for Carr won’t necessarily put a damper the Murray speculation. Recently, Gruden said that watching Murray play was like “watching a video game” and lauded the QB for his athleticism. With four picks in the top 35, including the No. 4 overall choice, the Raiders have enough ammo to take Murray and still strengthen other areas.
Carr, 28 in March, went just 4-12 as the Raiders’ starter last season. He completed a career-high 68.9% of his passesbut threw for only 19 touchdowns against ten interceptions.
Coming from the same man who said that there’s not a lot of elite pass rushers out there, after trading Mack
And he also used the “let me make that clear” remark about having a great rapport with Reggie McKenzie.
When asked about the possibility of the Raiders drafting Murray, Carr said “ I’ll fight him in the octagon, then we’ll see who’s the franchise QB!”
Uh oh… A vote of confidence. Hope Carr has his bags packed.
Is someone gonna tell Gruden that Carr isn’t a franchise QB not even for them? He’s good but nothing screams he’s the kinda franchise QB
Actually believe that a 1-2 quarterback scheme of Carr & McCarron is much better than several NFL teams. Raiders should focus on improving almost any other area on their team before they readdress the quarterback position.
What can be expected of any QB who had his #1 WR traded, his replacement was a worn-out 30 something in Jordy. 2 RB’s over 30, and their 1st round tackle from last year getting beat routinely?
Draft Murray, trade Carr. Finally get Gruden his dream team going before going to Las Vegas.
Thays because they will wait to next year when there a better qb class to draft one
trade him so Gruden can get his wish of being fired and collecting millions while he sits on the couch. That is the only reason i can see him doing the things he is doing.
Carrs the 2019 Raiders starting quarterback. With that being said , JMO, I dont think Carr moves to Vegas with them.
