Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray will be among the prospects auditioning at the 2019 NFL Draft Combine, according to a press release from the NFL. There are 338 participants in total, but Murray’s name stands out due to the intrigue surrounding him and his ongoing dilemma of deciding between football and baseball.
The Oakland A’s (and, by extension, Major League Baseball) are in a tug-of-war against the NFL to secure Murray’s services. Murray, the No. 9 overall pick in last year’s MLB draft, profiles as a promising outfielder in the baseball world. He also has serious potential as an NFL QB and he stands to earn more than double the $4.66MM signing bonus that the A’s gave him if he winds up being a first-round pick.
On the baseball side, Murray is represented by super agent Scott Boras. However, he has yet to retain an agent for the NFL. That has let some NFL execs to question his commitment to football, though today’s news may convince the doubters otherwise.
In his first season as a starter, Murray threw for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns and ran for another 1,001 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Sooners. Oklahoma reached the College Football Playoff semifinals with Murray at the helm but fell to Alabama 45-34.
this kid’s punking the A’s
I don’t doubt he has the talent/potential to do well in either sport, but he needs to commit to one. How he is dealing with the A’s can’t be making a good impression on NFL teams
He was already drafted by a MLB and he will go in the 1st Rd in the NFL draft.
No talent? He’s playing his cards man
He didnt say that Kyle Murray doesnt have talent. In fact, the guy you replied specifically said that he doesnt doubt that he has the talent.
Get your eyes checked you goof
He’s digging a hole for himself! No nfl team will take him in the first round if he can’t decide what he wants to do
That’s ridiculous. A handful of teams are eyeing him potentially in the first round. If his combine stats are better than good than you can kiss the A’s goodbye. Why would he want to go make less money playing in the worst sports city in America when he could make bank playing for 17 weeks out of the year. If by some miracle he’s not taken in the first 31 picks you can bet the Pats grab him.
After watching him on the tv sports radio shows, I think this guys a real mess. Super awkward and indecisive.
I wonder what round he’ll fall to after he measures in at 5’9″, 170 lbs.
Supplemental
Exactly. It costs this pipsqueak. just a few days out of his life to do the combine. Participation means nothing. I’m looking forward to seeing his physical measurements. He’ll do well in the drills, including passing but if you’re too small to see over 6’4″ defensive linemen (bog standard these days) and too fragile to take the hits from top calibre 250lbers, you have no place in the NFL. Ask RGIII how the NFL is working out for him. And he was substantially bigger than Kyle Murray.
Get back to batting practice, Murray, and stop wasting NFL fans’ time.
Defensive lineman in the NFL aren’t any taller than they are at most Power Five colleges. The more important issue for Murray is his slight build. He will take way more than punishment in the League than the Big 12.
Lavar Ball kisses Lonzo on the lips every night
LOL!!! this is the best Kyler Murray comment so far
Get him a step stool to stand on. Don’t wanna miss him.
This is 100% Oakland’s fault. They should have NEVER agreed to let him go back to college to play football for his senior season after paying him a $4.6M bonus. All other first round MLB picks are expected to report immediately to the team to begin their career after signing.
Given that Oakland gave him this out, Murray owes it to himself to at least explore NFL opportunitied if football is his true passion. One thing’s for sure, even if he ultimately chooses baseball, no MLB team will ever agree to allow this again going forward.
