Giants head coach Pat Shurmur says quarterback Eli Manning will return to the Giants in 2019, as Paul Schwartz of the New York Post writes. Things have been trending in that direction, but this marks the first real confirmation we’ve heard on the matter.
“Well, I think Eli can help us win games,” Shurmur said. “He proved, when the players around him started playing better, that he can play at a very high level and help us win games. Yeah, at this point I want Eli back. He’s back. Get ready to go with him.”
Last season, Manning raised his completion rate to a career-high 66% and his 7.5 yards-per-attempt average was considerably higher than it was in the previous two seasons. He also dropped his interceptions total (11) to the lowest its been during his 14 seasons a full-time starter. The Giants also won four of five games during a midseason stretch behind improved play from Manning.
If Manning is on the Giants’ roster on March 15 – and it sounds like he will be – he’ll receive a $5MM roster bonus. His 2019 cap figure is set to be $23.2MM, which is no longer a top number for QBs.
I’d be drafting his replacement this year. He’s regressing and his line didn’t give him much help either.
Do you know what you’re talking about? Eli had arguably his best season and he’s regressing? Ya okay bud, stronger QB class next year too. Giants have too many holes to take a backup QB at 6
Saying “okay bud” is the epitome of a washed up high school football player that went nowhere. Thats right on par with how you think your some football expert and always toss insults instead of an argument. Eli is 38 years old, grades as average on PFF they need to seriously think about the future at that position. Having a QB sit behind him for a year is extremely valuable. The Chiefs had Alex Smith in the prime of his career and they committed 2 firsts rounders to his replacement. This is a QB driven league and right now the Giants are behind.
Lmaoooooooo you’re hilarious! I did provide an argument which was how can Eli be regressing when he had the best year for him? That was my main problem with the statement that he’s “regressing” which if you read the article simply isn’t true. I agree they do need to think about the future of the position but simply taking a QB because you feel you have to is not the answer. I’m no expert never claimed to be but I can’t help it if some of the people on here make me sound like one by saying idiotic things like Bell/AB unemployed or they’ll end up in the AAF.
It was definitely not his best year. Its not hard to stat pad as a QB espically someone like Eli who was playing meaningless games and has 3 elite weapons. When the games meant something early on Eli had a noodle arm, he did improve as the year went on but it was too late. Your not guarenteed to have a really high pick next season. Take a QB now if its your guy
I wanna apologize if I was kinda rude to you but I do completely agree absolutely take a QB if he’s your guy. I’m probably in the minority but imo the East is up for grabs so I would take someone that can contribute right away but that’s me.
23 quarterbacks have thrown 750-plus passes the last 2 seasons. Where does Eli tank in QBR? 23rd. Enough said.
Autocorrected from rank but tank is what the Giants should do lol
When the heck were any of the games during the 1-7 run “meaningless”?????? and to who????
Early on the offense was non-existent, the O-Line was terrible as far as either run blocking or allowing pressure on each pass play and overall the team just wasn’t on the same page.
Do you really think this team is going to jump to the playoffs in 2019? They are probably still a 7-8 win max team with a high probability due to drafting that they may in fact be a 5-6 win team which would put us into the 5-10 range most probably in new years draft. And next years draft already has several prospects rated high than the guys with warts in this years draft at QB.
Meaningless games were after they started 1-7 after they were knocked out of the playoffs that was meaningless. Look at the last season game when the Redskins packed it in. They demolished the skins 40-16, a game where Eli went off. Nice game but you cant really read into it as a defining game for his status. Im not saying at all they should get rid of him. But 2019 should 100 percent be his last year as a starter and having the backup learn from him would be ideal. Thats why they should take a QB. Like i said you never know where you will be drafting enxt year and its proven to trade up to the top 2 spots you need to trade a TON
That’s terribly true but is there the “right” QB in this years class to look the other way at the numerous options in the draft at other positions of need like D-Line, O-Line, Safety and LB? Don’t think you can compare Haskins, Murray or any of the other QB’s to Mahomes when he was in college….
So does the rest of the nfc east
