The Browns have re-signed tackle Greg Robinson, according to his agents. It’s a one-year deal with a $7MM base value, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. With playing incentives, the deal could reach up to $9MM.
Robinson, 27 in October, hooked on with the Browns on a low-cost, one-year deal last year. He wound up appearing in all 16 games and started every game in the second half of the year in Desmond Harrison‘s stead.
The former No. 2 overall pick has not come close to living up to that draft slot, but he did show something in the Browns’ first post-Joe Thomas season. Pro Football Focus graded Robinson as its No. 63 tackle (out of 80 full-time qualifiers) in 2018.
Robinson was on the fringes of the NFL when he signed with Cleveland, but his career may finally be getting back on track. The Browns will work with him to try to keep the penalties down (ten penalties from Week 10 onward), but they believe his size will help to protect quarterback Baker Mayfield in the pocket.
Before joining the Browns, Robinson started in 42 of his 46 games for the Rams and made six starts for the Lions in 2017 before suffering an ankle injury.
I like this. His advanced metrics weren’t great, but he was a solid presence on the line and he (and Kitchens scheming better) helped stabilize the line a lot. But it’s also a low-risk deal that doesn’t stop them from drafting a long-term option either.
Yeah agreed, he was solid when he took over and if they take a LT in draft (which I fully expect), he can fill in if rookie needs to develop.
63 out of 80 is solid?
More solid than 7 others.
hmmm 17 maybe?…lol
haha
Sorry. Been that kind of day. Sick child.
Yes, I don’t care about rankings from a website, I watched the games and they looked much better with him at LT….so yes, he was solid….not saying he’s the answer.
@TJECK If you take PFF grades as such gospel, why was Baker graded 6 points higher than your QB Big Ben?
My point is, it’s clearly an imperfect metric. But when I watched the Browns before and after Robinson, I saw a lot of differences. He really stabilized the line, and while I’m not claiming he’s a superstar, he was a very serviceable player.
PFF is probably the best resource out for judging OL play. They are pretty good at grading most positions.
Hey, I’m a Steeler fan but I see a decent amount of Browns games. Regardless of what PFF says, their O-line was night-and-day better with Robinson in the lineup. He may not be their future at LT but he certainly deserves to be the present.
Another horrifying reminder the Rams took this guy at 2. They made the worst and best picks of that draft in the 1st round. Dont think well see that again.
Good. At least we have a decent option to begin next season there, compared to last year.
Agreed; I always think it’s weird seeing mock drafts constantly picking a left tackle for them at 17. I’m not saying they couldn’t necessarily improve on Robinson, but they have bigger needs that they could get at a better value with that pick.
Yep. Defense.
Exactly. For me, in order, it’s the defensive line (preferably an interior guy but another rusher wouldn’t hurt), a #2 corner, a big bodied receiver, and possibly another linebacker.
Wow. That’s a bit much for Robinson. I thought he had a good year, but $7MM seems like an overpay.
I agree with most of the comments above. I thought Robinson was a noticeable upgrade to Harrison. Surprised he graded so low by PFF. He last the eye test last season.
Completely agree that $7MM feels high. But then I’m thinking about how the browns never spend anything close to the cap space available so at least they keep their guy who they feel was a huge upgrade over Harrison.
You do realize the going rate for LT is double that right?
He will 22nd highest paid LT in the NFL in 2019. Between Ronnie Stanley ($6.5MM) and Alejandro Villanueva ($8.4MM). In terms of RT, he would be the 11th highest paid, right behind Donald Penn at $7.2MM. So yea, you have a point.
