The Broncos “kicked the tires” on acquiring Nick Foles from the Eagles before sending a fourth-round pick to the Ravens for quarterback Joe Flacco on Wednesday, tweets Mike Klis of 9News.
Per Klis, Denver opted for Flacco over Foles for a variety of reasons. First, Flacco has played under center (as opposed to out of a shotgun formation) with regularity: in 2017, Baltimore ranked eighth in the NFL in total snap percentage under center (52%) and sixth in pass rate under center (37%), according to Warren Sharp. That’s critical given that new Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, a product of the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree, figures to put Flacco under center quite frequently. (For reference, Shanahan’s 49ers in 2018 finished second in total snap percentage under center and third in pass rate under center.)
Second, the Broncos consider Flacco the better financial value, reports Klis. Flacco will collect an $18.5MM base salary in 2019, but neither that figure, nor any of his future base salaries, are guaranteed. Foles, meanwhile, is expected to be traded while on a franchise tag that will entitle him to a fully guaranteed, ~$25MM 2019 salary. A Foles extension, as Justis Mosqueda of Optimum Scouting recently detailed, will likely cost an acquiring team north of $40MM in total guarantees.
Additionally, the Eagles are reportedly seeking at least a third-round pick in exchange for Foles, while the Broncos were able to acquire Flacco for only a fourth-round choice.
Ill say it now. Foles will have a better season than Wentz.
Agreed. They should hold on to Foles and deal Wentz
Hilarious
Just as hilarious as it was and I said it last year also.
Agree to disagree
ill get crucified in Philly for agreeing, but with Wentz’s health concerns i think Nick is a more reliable option. If fact, i think trading Wentz may be better. Wentz may end up wanting more money then Foles at some point, but the sevarl injuries in a row is concerning. The Eagles also have a lot of holes that need to be filled in coming years, and you could probably get much more for Wentz.
Sure but Foles can actually win games for you. Flacco is done.
History seems to say that Foles can only win for the Eagles, and then only in the late part of a season…
The Broncos later decided on Flacco over Folers explaining that they prefer losing over winning.
Flacco was a super bowl MVP too, for how much peoole talk about him like he is a loser
I believe Flacco still has a year or 2 left but to bring up the super bowl MVP is dumb it’s been 6 years and he hasn’t been nearly as good as he was during that playoff run
Yeah i dont have any issue with people saying he has declined. Its just the comments calling him a “loser” that are ridiculous
Agreed. Flacco is a solid and stable QB. Maybe with good receivers around him and a great defense, Flacco can put up enough points to win games. Remember, the Broncos won their recent Super Bowl with a steeply declined Peyton Manning at the helm. All because of great defense.
Most of that defense is now gone
Flacco is a giant improvement over Keenum so Elway did good there. Not a fan of any of these QB’s or teams but Flacco will have a better season than both Foles and Jackson! And Wentz will have a better season than all of them!
Broncos are never going to get their next Elway without good scouting/luck in the draft.
Man I am an improvement over Keenum, so that’s really not saying much. Flacco is done. Broncos would’ve been better off with Foles
I doubt it!
Amazing that a former great quarterback hasn’t got a clue on what one looks like.
I like how the Broncos took Flacco because they could get out from under that contract if they had to.
Amazing how much of a rotating door it has been for the Broncos at the QB position.
Broncos should have kept the 4th rounder and signed Tyrod Taylor for half the cost.
Tyrod may be worse than Kaepernick
Ok buddy
Don’t disagree with that Kenly guy… he knows all. Just ask him, he’ll tell ya. Flacco got replaced by a guy who basically runs the option, BUT he won super bowl MVP 100 years ago, though!
As a Steelers fan I am relieved that Baltimore chose Jackson. Much patience will be required in Baltimore.
Ay here is someone doesn’t know how to form an argument, just likes to toss out insults. Lamar looked like a deer in headlights in the playoffs. Flacco would have been a much better option
Flacco was ranked 19th in total QBR last season, and Keenum was 29th. Fans may not like the move based on their opinions but stats reflect that the Broncos will be unquestionably better with Flacco next season.
Makes perfect sense. Spend $7,000,000 less so you can get a QB who isn’t any better than the current QB. Reminds me of Carl Peterson with the Chiefs in the 90’s. Didn’t want to pay Nick Lowery an extra $250,000 so he signed “ Lin I missed 3 in a row and cost a 13-3 team a shot at the Super Bowl. Nice
Why do some Philly fans believe Foles can walk on water? He played behind an OL that led the league in time of possession 2 of the past 3 years. That benefits any QB enormously. He will look like an average backup guy when he gets behind an OL that isn’t as good as he had before.
So being on the field for longer periods than normal is beneficial to offensive linemen (AKA players in the worst physical shape of those on the roster)?
Bruce Matthews played 296 games. Lomas Brown 263 games. Jackie Slater played 259 games. Mike Kenn 251 games. Not bad numbers for “players in the worst physical shape of those on the roster.”
They’re both pukes but Foles less so. I’d take him over the Eagle Muppet all day.
Dope
