Last offseason, the Raiders caught flack for hiring a head coach off of the TV screen and potentially not living up to the spirit of the Rooney Rule. This week, they went back to the well to hire former NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock as their GM. They may or may not have given real consideration to minority candidates, but they did technically check that box.
Before the Mayock hire, the Raiders interviewed former Giants college scouting director Marc Ross and former Eagles personnel man Trey Brown, according to Mike Florio of PFT (on Twitter) and Dan Graziano of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The Raiders also reached out to former Giants GM Jerry Reese, but he declined the opportunity.
With the Ross and Brown interviews, the Raiders ensured that they will not face a penalty for violating the Rooney Rule. However, their course of action is reminiscent of last year when they interviewed Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson for a head coaching job that was already promised to Jon Gruden.
Nobody cares.
Exactly. What’s next, teams needing to interview Asians before making an offer? How about women? I hate PC BS
Yes because nobody hires retread white coaches and executives for years simply because they’re there. It’s about making sure you have a diverse candidate field that’s representative of the population. 28% of the players are white but 21 of the 24 head coaches, 88%, are white. 5/8 coaches fired since the season began were black. Only 1 GM is a minority. THAT’S a problem, and expecting teams to interview someone seems, on the surface, to be a token gesture the candidates gain the exposure of having their names linked as a candidate all the while learning from the interview process, strengthening both their skills and experience.
Yeah im sure they are setting out to hire retreads simply because they are white
To be a retread it helps to actually have had a chance, no? You inadvertantly made my point, thanks!
It’s official, Joe is racist. He’s only able to see people as skin color and not by qualifications.
I didn’t know there were 0 former black head coaches out there.
Black coaches rarely get second opportunities, h less they were very successful. White coaches who tank badly in one situation are often give. Second chances, which is why guys like mcdaniels and munchak are getting interviews. You think Raheem Morris or Todd Bowles will ever be head coaches again?
McDaniels is getting second looks because of his body of work…if Raheem and Bowles go somewhere and rebuild their value I’m sure they’ll get another shot as well.
What was the combined records of those 5/8 coaches that were fired, since you brought them up?
The Rooney rule is so stupid and a complete waste of time
Confuse a liberal with common sense.

I hate small minded idiots that can’t understand any bit of nuance or comprehend white privilege.
Or people who call others small minded because they aren’t in complete lockstep or drinking the “white privilege” Koolaid spewed out in dogmatic rhetoric designed to shame people who are capable of individual thought.
Yea.. White Privilege is definitely NOT a thing. PHEW!!!
Did you have two mommies or two daddies, poor Joke? I mean Joe.
Maybe my biological parents were both gay. Maybe I’m a product of cloning. Maybe a stork dropped me off on a door step. What would any of that have to do with
Maybe my biological parents were both gay. Maybe I’m a product of cloning. Maybe a stork dropped me off on a door step. What would any of that have to do with white privilege? Your#MAGA is showing; might wanna tuck it back in
So explain what just happened in Miami…
Stupid rule. It’s racist and needs to go. You’re forcing teams to interview minorities because they’re minorities not because they’re qualified or the right person for the job. Nothing says progress like making a rule acknowledging they’re not qualified enough so let’s ignore that and try to get em hired cause they’re black or asian or transgender what minority.
California recently passed a law forcing companies to have at least 1 woman on their boards. And now they wonder why companies are leaving California.
California, if it were it’s own country, would have the 5th largest GDP in the world, ahead of Great Britain, France, and India. I think the Californian economy is doing ok despite them making small gestures to break the ‘old boys’ network’ thinking.
Truth is much more fun. If California were it’s own country they would be bankrupt. they currently have a 108% debt ratio. Meaning they spend more than they steal (taxes). California is a joke.
The United States as a whole is at 105%. This country is a joke
@Joe
So not only are you a racist you are a non patriot anti American.
If this country is such a joke then move the hell out of it!! Bye Bye racist loser
They leave cause of the state taxes. It has nothing to do with hiring women. Most of the people in Cali tend to be more progressive anyways, so it’s less of a concern there.
Minorities make up the largest portion of NFL players by far, but are largely absent from coaching and front office positions, including lower level coaching jobs.
If it were a fair system, there is no logical explanation why so few people who play the game rise into the coaching ranks, even though they represent the majority of the talent.
The system is historically biased against potential coaches of color, and frankly, the evidence suggests it still is. That is why the rule exists.
Coaching ranks is more so who you know than what you know. Rizzi in Miami was being groomed by gase
Also former qbs and guys who coached in college tend to get more opportunities. Want more blacks in coaching ranks have em go to college schools then n and climb up the ranks like most white people do.
Jason garret Frank Reich Doug Pederson were all former qbs but Garrett for instance was groomed by wade Phillips who was son of legendary coach bum Phillips
That’s the problem. If people hire who they know, many blacks will not be given coaching opportunities, especially in college, which is worse than the NFL. That’s why the Rooney Rule exists. To force people to consider others for no. They wouldn’t without the good ol boy network you just touted.
The greatest expansion of diversity in head coaching was largely the result of the Dennis Green/Tony Dungy tree, and the Ozzie Newsome tree. Do you think that is a coincidence? Eric Biemeny is the first black OC Reid ever hired. Many other staffs like Nagy’s and Pederson’s have only two or three black coaches. Pederson also passed over a black OC in favor of the good ol boy network.

PC culture is really fascism disguised as sensitivity.
Yep. Fascism and socialism are virtually the same. The goal is to remove free speech and destroy creativity.
Stupid rule.
Resist political correctness every chance you get….always question the moron who calls you out….ask them the name of their shrink….it pisses them off when you don’t follow their stupid ways
Even if a candidate isn’t getting a specific job, the interview process is great training for the next opportunity .
Grand waste of time, especially if you’re the so called “token” that hits the interview circuit and gets used to satisfy the rule…
Did you have two mommies or two daddies, poor Joke? I mean Joe.
So the spirit of the rule is to give minorities an equal opportunity to be Gruden’s next fall guy?
It’s a stupid rule! Very stupid rule! It needs to be gone!
