Former Giants defensive coordinator and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo has emerged as the favorite to replace Bob Sutton as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Spagnuolo and Andy Reid worked together in Philadelphia and share the same agent, so this would be a pretty natural pairing in Kansas City.
Sutton was fired this week after the Chiefs’ heartbreaking exit in the AFC Championship Game. Soon after, the loud and lovable Rex Ryan was connected to the job, but it sounds like the former Giants coach has a leg up over the ex-Jets coach.
Spagnuolo didn’t coach in 2018, but he is highly respected around the NFL for his work as the Giants’ DC. The 59-year-old also comes with head coaching experience, as he led the Rams from 2009-11. We haven’t heard his name much in this cycle, but he was connected to the Broncos’ DC job at one point.
Hiring a guy because you share the same agent sounds like a can’t miss strategy. I’m surprised Andy’s middle name isn’t Einstein.
Solid point, terrible joke.
Yup terrible joke…. he could of said “I don’t remember it saying Andrew Einstein Reid on that Punt Pass and Kick Highlight”
no offense taken guys and in fact it’s actually an honor to get less respect than Rodney Dangerfield.
It’s more than that. Reid was the one who gave him his first NFL job, and he was still working for Reid when the Giants hired him the first time.
ABS: Anyone But Sutton.
Rob Ryan?
There’s not much left out there…I hate the idea of either Ryan…John Fox, Marvin Lewis, and Jack Del Rio are probably passed DC roles… Spags is a proven DC with a shoddy HC record-great fit imho #ABS lol
Romeo! Romeo!….where for art thou Romeo!…lol.
Rex Ryan would never work in a Midwest Market like KC. They would put up with his clown act about 1 quarter. Especially since Clark Hunt isn’t a media clown like Jerra Nose Picker “ Jones.
would love spags as def co
Chiefs Eyeing Steve Spagnuolo For DC
He’d be great and if he could recreate a defense in KC that matched 2007 Giant defense, he would be legend
Boom! Called it.
As a Giants fan, he is a solid coach. He obviously couldn’t make chicken salad out of chicken $hit the second time around. But if you give him talent he will get most out of it. 4-3 D, mixes up blitzes, prefers man to man, not a good zone defensive mind, likes to rush 4, but will send the corners and S.
He’s gonna need an Antonio Pierce to make it work. A QB for the defense.
