On Monday night, the Cowboys were held scoreless in the second half and lost 28-14 to the Titans. It marked the Cowboys’ second straight loss and dragged the team down to 3-5, leading many to question Jason Garrett‘s job security. However, owner Jerry Jones says he will not make an in-season head coaching change (via Todd Archer of ESPN.com).
Whether Garrett is the biggest problem in Dallas is up for debate, but something was clearly amiss with the Cowboys’ game plan on Monday night. Star running back Ezekiel Elliott ripped off 96 total yards in the first half, but had just six touches in the entire second half. Meanwhile, quarterback Dak Prescott didn’t do them any favors by throwing an ill-advised end zone interception early in the game and giving up a costly fumble in the second half.
Many are concerned about Prescott’s development in the midst of his third season, but Jones reaffirmed his commitment to the former fourth-round pick.
“Listen,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan (Twitter link). “Dak is the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. He’s young and he’s going to get extended.”
The Cowboys – with Garrett on the sidelines and Prescott under center – will travel to Philadelphia this week to take on the defending champs.
Didn’t he say the same thing a few years ago, then end up firing the coach a few days later?
Yes he did and the fired coach was Wade Phillips. I think Garrett took over for him.
Maybe it’s just me, but isn’t the problem the owner and GM.
He’s only part of the problem. They need a change at OC. There’s no creativity in the play calling. Practically every 1st down is a run play, even when the box is stacked with 8 or 9 defenders. No screens, no flea flickers, no dump offs in the flat or slants across the middle. Last nite Beasley wasn’t even considered until the 4th quarter.
Who is at fault if the OC isn’t creative, or Prescott isn’t developing as expected? Isn’t that the HC fault ultimately? Jerrah has fired everyone but Garrett the last 8+ years yet mediocrity still reigns supreme in Dallas. Parcells had this team heading in the right direction once upon a time and Jerrah was involved in personal then. Garrett is a terrible HC and Duk isn’t the long term solution at QB, it’s year 3 as a starter and he’s still making rookie mistakes like throwing into double coverage in the end zone (last night). The staff has no faith in him and it’s evident when you pay attention to the 2 and 3rd and long screen passes and draw plays. I think there’s talent on this team, however there’s no accountability. Garrett is 8-8 almost every year and still has a job, and Duk stinks out loud almost every week then goes in front of the press and talks about how unacceptable his play is. If this team got a HC that has some kind of juice, or demanded respect like a Bill Cower, Nick Saban or Bill Parcells type guy and a QB that could go through pass pattern progressions, and threaten the oppositions secondary, maybe then we can put blame solely on the front office. Until then it’s 8-8 Baby!
The structure of this team is the problem, not the players or even head coach for that matter. Front office staff needs to stop trying to do the job of personnel that’s on the field and in the locker room. Jerry is a great owner, but that’s all he needs to be. You hire staff for a reason, let them do their job with no strings attached. Until this happens, we’ll just keep talking about what the Cowboys could be.
Just before Jerry was asked this question, he was seen looking at a text he recieved from Jason. A reporter was able to see the text which read, “Jer, remember I still have those pictures on my hard drive of you dressed up as a Cowboys Cheerleader dancing in front of me, Troy and Emmit.”
At that point Jerry Jones pronounced Jason Garrett job safe.
