In the span of two days, the Giants unloaded two defensive starters. Cornerback Eli Apple was shipped to the Saints and defensive tackle Damon Harrison was sent to the Lions, and there could be more deals to come between now and the deadline. Those in the know are under the impression that anyone on the Giants defense is available for the right price, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com tweets.
That just might include cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who is drawing interest from teams around the league, according to CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora (on Twitter). Jenkins, who turns 30 on Monday, is in Year Three of a five-year, $62.5MM contract, and it doesn’t make sense a rebuilding club to hold on to him.
If the Giants can get something of value back for the veteran, they should probably jump at the chance to make a deal, even though it will leave them with some dead money on the cap. Despite having two interceptions and one forced fumble through seven games, Jenkins hasn’t been consistently sharp in coverage. The Giants presently rank 27th in pass defense DVOA, per Football Outsiders, and some of the blame rests on Jackrabbit’s shoulders.
If Jenkins remains with the club, he’ll carry expected cap hits of $14.7MM in each of the next two seasons.
Ok, a little bit of a shock but not unexpected. As I’ve posted earlier, Giants are clearing out the malcontents and attitude problems players. A whole new culture is needed in the locker room. Sorry to see a productive player like Harrison go, but why keep his salary cap hit if the team is gonna finish 3-13, or 2-14. And with a rebuild next year as well with a ‘upgrade’ to 6-10 or 8-8, use the cap money on younger players.
So far 2 of the 4 players I predicted to be traded by the deadline have gone, with only Jenkins and Ogletree remaining from my prediction last week.
Stay tuned as the fire sale continues.
They should sell off they have a lot of guys making a lot of money that are getting older and they aren’t winning so might as well get some assets
That means they should get rid of that scumbag odell beckham.
I don’t know why they don’t trade Eli Manning! I mean the playoffs are gone and he will not be the starter there next year so why not move him?
Someone would have to want him. Lol
No one wants Eli. They should trade Vernon and Jenkins. I’d love to get rid of Beckham but I don’t think anyone wants to give up the high pick plus assume the contract.
Summary; the GM and coach really didn’t do their homework on the roster. Signing a WR to a huge deal, drafted a RB, and did nothing to help at the QB & OL spot. I’d have to grade that as an F.
While it hasn’t panned out, they did attempt to upgrade there OL over the offseason…
That left side was supposed to be good (which is what they did try to upgrade) at least but last game was probably their worst this season.
Well not that they did nothing on the OLine. They drafted a a top guard, signed a LT, a RG, and moved the LT to RT. Just what they did do did not work at all.
I’d trade OBJ for two first round picks, or a first and a second. The Jets have a lot of cap space and he wouldn’t have to leave NY.
Agree
I wouldn’t give more than a 3rd for him. Too much of a headache and too big of a cap hit.
Would love it, but will never happen. Giants would be lucky to get a back end 1st rounder for Beckham with the contract and his antics.
It’s the smart thing to do. Gotta go through that rebuild. Everyone goes through it at some point
Might as well see what Manning would fetch on the market. No sense in keeping him around.
Maybe the Steelers can improve their defense with a trade for Bell. Not that it would ever happen, but I can wish.
Fixing mistakes. Apple, Snacks, and Jack Rabbit are salaries that need to be shed. They need to spend more on OL. If they plan on drafting the next QB, or clear enough cap to trade for a QB… cough cough Derek Carr..
I wonder what they would offer the Raiders for Carr? An NYG #1 draft pick is too valuable and could actually be used on a QB like Justin Herbert if they wanted to start fresh and have a QB on a rookie salary. Taking on Carr means taking on his big contract. Raider fan here, by the way, and at this point, I’m all in on the fire sale Gruden is having to help build our future instead. I’ve lost my faith in Carr.
Too bad Solder is so awful and they couldn’t move him.
So New Yorker’s not interested in watching the Giants and Rangers rebuild get to follow the Jets and Knicks. I guess this is why the city has those bridge jumpers.
Good one crosseyedlemon!!! Great name too.
I think the Giants made a huge mistake by taking a RB over the QB. If you look at the history of drafting RB’s you can get high quality in the 2nd through 4th round. Barkley is really good but its not about him, ELI is very old & they had a chance to draft a few really good QB’S. Now, they are forced to draft one and that’s not going to be easy because there are 4 teams that could be worse than the Giants so they might get a top 5 pick. They don’t have to worry about the Raiders, Bills or Cardinals drafting a QB so they will probably get 1 of the top rated QB’s coming out.
Dkaner – all true except there are no good QBs coming out this year. Hebert is staying most likely. Yes they made a mistake by not taking Darnold but they can’t do anything about that now. At this point they just need to keep trying to trade and stockpile picks. They still don’t have a 3rd round pick next year. Jenkins, Vernon, Beckham, Manning, or any other vets for that matter should all be on the table if teams are interested.
What about Beckham? He seems like the new Terrell Owens – a guy who has HOF talent but is such a pain he’ll wind up playing for five or six different teams, because everyone gets sick of him after a few years
