The Giants have agreed to trade defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison to the Lions, sources tell ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). In return, the Lions will send a fifth-round pick to New York.
The Giants signed Snacks to a five-year, $46.25MM deal in 2016. Harrison, for the most part, has been as good as advertised – few can bottle up runners like he can, and he presently ranks as Pro Football Focus’ No. 6 ranked interior defensive lineman in the NFL. However, his salary is steep, he’s one-dimensional compared to other top defensive tackles in the NFL, and he only plays on about 55% of snaps.
The Giants’ new regime appears to be all-in on a rebuild after moving cornerback Eli Apple on Tuesday and Harrison on Wednesday. With his 30th birthday coming up in about a month, Harrison and his hefty salary did not factor into Dave Gettleman‘s vision of the future. By moving Snacks, the Giants will save $4.6MM this year. Between him and Apple, the G-Men took $5.7MM off of the books.
The Lions, meanwhile, pick up a defensive tackle who stuffs the run the way that Dikembe Mutumbo shut down the finger roll. For years, Snacks has ranked as one of the NFL’s best ground game stuffers, and he hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season with the Jets.
Through Week 7, the Lions have allowed 139.3 rushing yards per game, better than only the porous Broncos and Falcons defenses. With Harrison in the lineup, you can expect that to change in short order.
The Lions were forced to go out-of-house at defensive tackle this year and wound up signing Sylvester Williams and Dunkin’ Donuts franchise owner Ricky Jean-Francois in free agency. Neither player has set the world on fire, so head coach Matt Patricia won’t lose sleep over pulling either player from the starting lineup.
Good deal.
No it’s not. The lions got a steal in this trade only a fifth round pick for one of the best dt’s in the league.
They did, but they didn’t have to give up more because of the salary.
Yep, great deal for the Lions! GO LIONS!
“Bottle up run stuffers”
“Shut down the finger roll”
Very descriptive article this morning!
Chargers could’ve used a guy like this…. don’t think they have the cap space to take on that kind of player though
Zach came to play today!
Stole him. Should of gotten a 3rd round pick for him. If Bridgewater nets a
3rd(which was too high) then he does as well
It factors in the salary too though
Dikembe Mutumbo reference? This DT should be proud of that
I get the giants are trying to rebuild and obtain draft picks but no one has ever gotten any better by trading talent and not getting virtually any value in return. Lions fleeced the giants here
Great move by Detroit
Giants lost out on the talent end. But salary cap. Dictates value. So even thou Snacks is a top run stopping DT. Can not back equal talent or value
Mara should retire to his office and let someone run the team. I do not know who,but the coaches and g.m. He has are his favorites and”yes men”. We knew 3yrs. Ago Eli had lost it, but Mara did nothing. This put us in the hole we are in now, no qb, no def. backs, no off. Linemen, no l.b., but we do have great rec., and a great r.b., just nobody to block for them, and nobody to get the ball to them.
That’s right, him and his queer eye for the straight guy son that needs a lesson in men’s fashion
Lions did outstanding when you consider they are getting the best run stopper over the past 3 years for a 5th round pick and they had two of them because of the trade of Laken Tomlinson. He has two more years on his contract and is 29 so he’s still going to be good for a few more years. Lions need to do a smart thing here before the trading deadline is over. They need to trade Golden Tate for a 3rd or 4th round pick. He’s in his walk year, they have a Stud in Golladay, deep threat in Jones and TJ Jones could take over in the slot. Michael Roberts should be the over the middle target once they trade Tate. Lions are not going to resign Tate and his slot or over the middle balls can go to Theo Riddick, Kerryon Johnson, Michael Roberts and even TJ Jones. The only way Lions can get a supplemental pick for Tate is for him to sign for over 50 million. If he just signs a 1 year deal, Lions get squat. Quinn, make this move!
And as Tate will be 31 next year, there’s no chance he’ll get a $50 million contract. Still, I’m not sure a team that just made a trade that announces to the world that they are going to make a run at the playoffs THIS season is going to trade one-half of one of what has been called one of the best pairs of starting wide receivers in the league.
He is a YAC monster, imagine Tate on the Patriots. It would be a great fit and Lions and pats love to trade.
Absolutely love this move. This guy is a tank in the middle and now it might free up Robinson a little more.
As for trading Tate, I don’t like that idea. Understand the reasoning though.
