After the Cowboys’ slow start, there was speculation about the job security of Jason Garrett. Garrett remains in charge, but one of his top lieutenants is no longer with the team. On Monday afternoon, the Cowboys sacked offensive line coach Paul Alexander, according to a team announcement.
Alexander spent 27 season with the Bengals before becoming the Cowboys’ OL coach this year. Less than halfway into the year, he’s out of a job.
The Cowboys gave Alexander the keys to one of the league’s most talented offensive lines, but the unit took a major hit when Travis Frederick was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Without Frederick, the offensive line has been inconsistent and unable to provide adequate pocket protection for quarterback Dak Prescott. Apparently, the Cowboys believe that Alexander’s direction and blocking schemes are at least partly to blame for the front five’s struggles.
Already, Prescott has been sacked 23 times, which is tied for fifth-most in the NFL. Last year, he was sacked 32 times all year and was brought down in the backfield just 25 times as a rookie in 2016.
Marc Colombo, who has served as the team’s assistant offensive line coach since 2016, will serve as the team’s primary offensive line coach. If Colombo can’t get the O-Line back on track, more heads could roll in Dallas.
Wow. Thanks for coming, Coach Alexander, I don’t care if your Pro Bowl Center and the guy who makes the line calls is out, you’re the problem. Why not fire him before the bye week? Now if we can only figure out a way to fire our crappy GM and HC.
He fires jimmy johnson after he wins 2 straight Super Bowls! And he keeps this
(So Called) head coach around who might miss the playoffs again! Jones you’re a joke!
It was more a case of Jimmy Johnson wanting to leave Dallas than Jones wanting to end the relationship. Gotta give Jerry credit for being more loyal than most owners but yeah he has made some bad decisions over the years.
He got fire because of the technique he was teaching where you place one hand on the shoulder and one hand lower by the hip. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it and he tried to “fix” something that wasn’t broken.
Put your hand on my hip when you dip we dip I dip… :0)
Technique wise, wouldn’t it be better to place both hands on the opponents cajones and squeeze? That usually stops them dead in their tracks.
He’s got fired because he’s the scapegoat for Jason Garrett’s continued mediocrity as a head coach. Never seen more excuses made for a head coach. That ONE playoff win must be worth 5yr of mediocrity
cough marvin lewis.cough cough jeff fisher
Well… Marvin Lewis Has at-least made the playoffs 7 times over his tenure
There’s a good chance the other shoe could drop at seasons end. Cowboys should make Iron Mike their next HC so that John Gruden isn’t the only dinosaur roaming the sidelines.
I wonder how the Bengals OL is doing since Dallas and Cincy basically traded their coaches. Still don’t understand why Dallas fired Pollack.
Who understands anything Dallas does?
Ohh so the O-Line coach is responsible for their crappy season! I don’t know the guy, but he’s probably happy to get out of Dallas.
Cowboys should have traded for a decent TE but stood pat once again
