It appears Matt Cassel will be Matthew Stafford‘s backup. The Lions are cutting the player who previously filled that role.
Jake Rudock did not make Detroit’s 53-man roster, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. But the Lions are interested in bringing him through to their practice squad if he’s unclaimed on waivers.
The 2016 draft choice generated trade interest last year, but the Lions ultimately kept him. He was rumored to have fallen behind the 36-year-old Cassel during training camp, and the Lions will go with the well-traveled veteran behind Stafford instead of a third-year incumbent.
Rudock did pass through waivers in 2016 when waived, but there’s obviously a chance the Lions won’t get to retain him.
Jake was a Wolverine like Brady so maybe the Patriots give him a chance.
Wouldn’t that be ironic, as it’s been reported that Cassells had the edge because Patricia knew him from the Patriots. In true Lions fashion, Rudock would win many rings with the Pats.
The Patriots day are over. There’s no more rings going to the Patriots. They are overrated & the AFC teams choked when they had the chance last year to put them away. They will finally get over that this year. Brady is a Hall of Famer who doesn’t seem to know when its time to go. It’s time to go!
Castle should have been cut, Rudock’s preseason numbers were noticeably better.
You can’t look at just preseason numbers since they are often against a team’s 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th stringers. Its also important to have a veteran backup QB who can run an offense right away. In all likelihood, the Lions will stash him on their practice squad if he isn’t picked up by another team.
Keeping 36 cassell over rudock makes zero sense. If teams were interested last year why take a chance of not clearing waivers. Now you need to find another backup in a year or two. Typical lions doesn’t matter who coach is. Only constant is ford ownership. Sad
