In a surprising move, the Giants have waived QB Davis Webb, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com (via Twitter). We learned earlier today that the Giants were open to trading either Webb or rookie signal-caller Kyle Lauletta, but it did not seem likely that either player would be waived. Instead, if the Giants could not find any trade partners, it appeared more plausible that the team would part ways with 30-year-old Alex Tanney.
But GM Dave Gettleman decided to cut ties with Webb, a 2017 third-round choice who played fairly well throughout the preseason and who at one point appeared to have a big lead over Lauletta for the backup QB job. Of course, Webb was selected by the Giants’ prior regime, so Gettleman & Co. did not have any attachment to him.
Raanan adds in a separate tweet that New York did discuss trading Webb to the Raiders before Oakland acquired A.J. McCarron to be its backup signal-caller. We will have to wait and see what the future holds for Webb, though he is not likely to be without work for long given his draft pedigree and the league-wide need for competent QBs.
WOW… this adds more salt on what they thought of the job Reese was doing…..
I can see Miami taking a flyer on him.
Wow, this is a shocker. I think this decision will come back to haunt Giants once Eli retires or is injured. So we have a 30 career backup that has a total of 5 NFL snaps to his credit. A rookie who is lacking in arm strength and that will come into play once the weather turns bad in November and the winds start to whip in MetLife Stadium. Plus I thought his lack of awareness and progression in the preseason games was lacking. Oh well, let’s hope that Eli continues his Ironman streak.
When Eli retires the Giants will bring in an outside replacement with a high draft pick or free agency
He will be picked up, and if not on practice squad by someone. Long shot back to Giants?
Putting all the previous regime nonsense aside, why would they cut Webb over Tanney? Especially if Webb performed well and doesn’t cost them anything.
Agreed. And I believe Tanney is slated to be the #3 QB (or at least that was a rumor I heard). Makes no sense to keep a 30 year old QB as the “developmental” QB. The only logical reasoning behind this is that the Giants wanted a veteran QB behind Eli and didn’t want to cut Lauletta (since that would be a quick admission of failure by the front office). At that point, Webb becomes the only “logical” QB to cut.
This also shows the mistake they made passing on Darnold. Barkley will be good, but his shelf life will not be like Darnold’s. And the Giants are dreaming with that schedule and lack of depth they are a playoff team this year.
way too early to make that conclusion. The heir apparent can still come through free agency or the draft next year, albeit it will cost them big time.
Probably so. I’m optimistic, but I really don’t even view the Giants as a top 10 team this year in the NFC.
I think when webb did not play in the last pre-season game the writing was on the wall.
I thought it was signifying that he was the #2 QB. This is nuts.
Paxton Lynch to the Giants, cut Tanney???
Why? He sucks.
