The Giants will head into the 2018 season without one of their longest-tenured players and one of their 2017 starting safeties, with both Mark Herzlich and Darian Thompson failing to make the team.
A 2017 fifth-round pick, edge defender Avery Moss missed out as well. As did Roger Lewis, a wideout who became needed when the Giants became decimated at receiver last season.
The Giants also released recently signed cornerback Leonard Johnson, who was trying to make a fifth NFL franchise’s 53-man roster. The former Buccaneer, Patriot, Panther and Bill started seven games with Buffalo last season.

Anyone know the difference between released and waived?
If you’re waived a team can make a claim for you. Then if no one else claims the player they are now on that team. If you’re released you become a free agent and can sign with anyone.
If a player is waived they can be claimed by another team. If they are released, they become a free agent and can sign anywhere.
Correct! Usually when a team waives a player it’s because they are looking to bring them back in some fashion, practice squad, IR are the usual reasons. Some surprises here, but when you are coming off a 3-13season and a new regime, you gotta stand out in camp. Can’t be constantly injured (Thompson, Moss) or play inconsistently (Adams, Munson, Rudolph, and Lewis).
Anyone know about Mark Herzlich? I’ve heard rumors team might bring him back in a coaching/community relations position?
With all the cut downs today do you see any players out there the Giants might be interested in?
Giants have the number two slot for waiver claims so I am sure they have scanned the wire and will continue to do so thru tomorrow and until rosters finalize. Multiple positions are being looked at so I expect several new additions to the roster in the coming days. I’d be shocked if they didn’t add at least 1 OL. Backup QB situation bears watching.
If you are waived or released also depends on years of service in the league. Being waived you have (I believe) 3 years or less time in the league, any more time served means they’re released and they instantly become free agents.
