By offering the Seahawks a second-round pick, Cowboys tried again recently to land one of this era’s best safeties. Again, they were rebuffed.
The Cowboys are not planning to increase their Earl Thomas offer beyond a second-rounder, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports. However, Moore adds that the Cowboys’ interest in Thomas “remains strong.”
But that interest only goes so far. Moore notes the Cowboys are comfortable enough with their current situation at safety to cap their Thomas offer at a second-round pick. Judging by the offer increase, it seems they’re not that comfortable with what they have on their back line.
Dallas has Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods in place as first-stringers under optimal circumstances, but Woods remains out due to injury. The team claimed Ibraheim Campbell off waivers from the Texans over the weekend as well, but Kavon Frazier is expected to start alongside Heath in Week 1.
Thomas intends to report to the Seahawks, but he’s also unhappy with the team. This situation appears headed for a divorce, and the Cowboys are willing to wait, presumably to see if the Seahawks’ price drops as the trade deadline nears. The Cowboys upped their offer to a second-round pick last week, after their max proposal was a third-rounder in April.
So, Thomas-to-Dallas remains a possibility, just one that’s on the back-burner right now.
Sounds like Dallas have a fair offer. I wouldn’t offer a 1st rounder for Thomas
As a Seahawk fan, I completely underside the business side of pro football both from the team and players side on these things. I like having Thomas but with the rebuild going on in Seattle (and it is a rebuilding season Hawk fans), I would have taken the 2nd round pick. It’s a fair offer and an asset that could help the team as they rebuild.
It’s not a rebuild but I’d have taken the 2nd as I think Cowboys are a 5 win team .
Only the Bills have a smaller positional payroll this season so the Hawks are definitely positioning themselves for a rebuild.
Not a huge gain of getting a mid-2nd rounder vs compensatory 3rd rounder while we get another year outta him.
Because he’s been the least gracious of our cornerstone players I say we franchise him next year and get a high pick in a sign and trade. In that scenario we get him this year and could still net a 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder that’s of higher value than a compensatory valuation.
If it’s true other teams are interested and the Cowboys offered a 2nd there’s a good chance it gets done for a 2nd and a mid round pick as other teams now know 2nd round pick is already out there.
If I’m Seattle and u don’t get what u want, let him play out the year. If he does well and you can’t come to terms you Franchise him.
I agree with Lou
Why are they being so stubborn? It’s either a second round pick now or nothing later.
Some team executives are just too egotistical for their own good and respond to anything they interpret as defiance by being vindictive. They are totally clueless to the message this kind of behavior sends to other players on the roster.
What kind of message does giving in to a player’s demands send? The Seahawks are not giving up on the season. ET3 is still more valuable to them than any other team, and they’re getting another year at a good value. Thomas is a great player, but he also serves as a mentor to new guys. You really think John Schneider doesn’t know what he’s doing?
The message you send by rewarding players who have made significant contributions is pretty obvious. Your letting players know that working hard to improve is not a wasted effort.
as they should. It’s not worth anymore than giving up a 2. I feel like the Thomas- Seattle bridge has burned to a crisp, so Dallas can just try to get him in the off-season if they wish.
What everyone seems to be oblivious to is if Thomas hits the open market his price may be too rich for Dallas next offseason and there’s no guarantee he makes it through this season in one piece. They need to get this deal done and try to lock Thomas into a team friendly/hometown deal (possibly) before some other team with cap space drives his price ski high this offseason. And if Dallas is so content with Heath/Woods why are they increasing the offer anyway? Pull the trigger clowns, your not fooling anyone.
The only team we have seen interested in Thomas is Dallas so who are these teams hiding behind the grassy knoll that are going to drive the price “sky high” in the offseason?
There were other teams this past week per reports, but I don’t know how many.
I don’t know who “the teams hiding behind the grassy knoll” are but if you think if/when Thomas hits free agency he won’t receive multiple offers your a fool. He is still regarded as the best FS in the NFL. If Thomas remains healthy through the season and still looks like himself he WILL generate interest in free agency. HOF caliber players don’t fall off trees and teams with cap space will gladly pony up, Thomas would be an upgrade for almost any team in the league today. Ed Reed got a 3 year deal at 31yrs old. Just because multiple teams aren’t willing to trade for Thomas doesn’t mean multiple teams won’t be interested if he’s a FA. Use your head guy, the whole “well Dallas can wait a year and just sign him as a FA” logic is flawed. There is a reason teams negotiate new contracts with their own players while still under contract, because if they hit free agency another team can drive their price “sky high”.
