The Packers and Aaron Rodgers have agreed to a record-breaking extension, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Rodgers’ new pact is a four-year add-on is worth $134MM, according to former teammate James Jones (on Twitter). The deal includes $103MM in the first three years, $80MM delivered by March of next year, and the opportunity to earn even more via incentives.
Rodgers has yet to ink the contract, but it is in the process of being finalized, according to Schefter. The deal should be formally completed before the start of the Packers’ season, which will be on Sept. 9 against the rival Bears.
Rodgers’ $33.5MM average annual value tops the $30MM AAV of Matt Ryan‘s extension with the Falcons and the $28.8MM AAV of Kirk Cousins‘ free agent deal with the Vikings, making him the league’s highest-paid player of all-time. After that, Jimmy Garoppolo ($27.5MM), Matthew Stafford ($27MM), and Derek Carr ($25MM) rank as the league’s highest-paid QBs.
Rodgers’ signing bonus of $57.5MM is the largest in NFL history, as Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. And, with $4MM in escalators, he can reach a maximum value of $138MM over the course of the extension.
The six-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time Super Bowl champion is among the very best quarterbacks in the NFL today. In 2013, he signed a five-year, $110MM deal to become the NFL’s highest-paid player, but the market quickly advanced and Rodgers’ deal became one of the most team-friendly pacts in the NFL.
Before this latest deal, Rodgers was the ninth-highest paid player in the NFL with salaries of $20.9MM this season and $21.1MM in 2019. With the new contract, the Packers have restored him as the league’s financial kingpin.
Last year, Rodgers got off to a hot start before suffering a broken collarbone in Week 6. Although Rodgers missed significant time, he’s 100% healthy this year and poised to get back to his old form.
Since taking over as the starter for the Packers in 2008, Rodgers has thrown for 312 touchdowns (the second most in the NFL) and led the Packers to the playoffs in 8-of-10 seasons.
This is not from James Jones so it can’t be true.
That’s a lotta dough. Best QB I’ve ever seen though.
Lol. Yeah right.
I’m serious. No doubt Brady has had the better career with the Super Bowls, Rodgers is a better player and athlete.
Not for nothing, but Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh played very effectively as a QB, defensive back and punter. No way Brady or Rodgers could match that.
Best QB not named Tom Brady
…who doesn’t cheat?
Oh geez. You need to watch other NFL games.
Please don’t post telling us that he should be a free agent due to his injury last year…..you know who you are….
Our friend needs to find himself a woman who can focus his mind on other things.
That dude is busy tearing up his living room in a fit of rage because other teams werent allowed to bid on him. Its a conspiracy!
I hope that’s sarcasm…he’s gotta be really upset with that 134M coming his way..
Talking about the guy who has spammed every page saying Rodgers is a free agent because they put him on IR twice
Yep, Here I am!! Impossible to extend a contract that was nullified due to AR being placed on IR twice in the same season for the same injury but that outcome was somehow buried by the collusion of the Packers, the League and Rodgers. IF Rodgers had WANTED the Free Agent route strongly enough, he would have had his representation make it an issue. He didn’t. Now he is happy with what in essence is a free agent contract that allows him to stay in Green Bay and continue to be a fan favorite – even of fans who don’t have foam cheese wedge hats.
You are going to be say9ng this in 20 years when he is in the hall of fame
I have no more to post on this matter. Aaron got his huge contract, just as if he had been declared a free agent (and WE all know that based on the rules he should have been) and gets to remain with his beloved Packers where he will go down as one of the greats. Bart Who? Brett Who?
With this bit of news I would think it mandatory that we have a poll to decide which QB will be the first to want to renegotiate his current deal.
Gotta be cousins of the ones listed above
Within the space of just a few days, Eli Manning has seen both Beckham and Rodgers receive a kings ransom. Still has 2 years left on his contract so I’m guessing he might be feeling suicidal right now.
Funny how no teams can mimic the success of the patriots.. maybe pay attention to how they construct there salary cap.. these guys are great but 5x super bowl champ not demanding top dollar vs guys with a couple rings demanding it, money must be a good tissue to wipe away your tears when not winning a super bowl.
nobody can mimic the success of the patriots because they don’t have a QB who is willing to play for 10x less than what he’s worth because his wife makes many many times more than him.
Please tell me more about how awesome the Patriots are in this thread about Rodgers’ extension.
That is pretty easy to turn down money when your wife is worth over double what you are.
Put on a Patriots uniform and POOF! you instantly develop a disdain for money. Robert Kraft is a lot of things but the Wizard of Oz isn’t one of them.
Most teams don’t want to buy camcorders to tape other teams’ practices before the Super Bowl, try to find loopholes in NFL rules, deflate footballs, hire weird training gurus or be d-bags like Lurch and Gronk.
Almost every sneaky tactic to gain an advantage was used long before the Patriots or AFL existed. The Bears-Packers rivalry has hundreds of humorous anecdotes related to dirty tricks that go all the way back to 1920.
PS by that logic, the Patsies should give up trying to match the success of the Steelers who have more SB victories than your team. Before you bring it up, your guys still can’t beat the Giants in the SB….then or now.
Your Patriots tears are delicious
$80 million before March???
That is INSANE
No. It’s not. The AAV is just under 30 million. For 6 years, that’s a steal compared to his value. Ryan’s and Cousins deals are worse for players who aren’t as good.
I for one am bummed about this… owning him in fantasy I was hoping this would drag on all season forcing him to play well. Now he will just fat and become a chucker
Hopefully he gets hurt in week 1
It would be pretty ironic if Roquan Smith took out Rodgers while violating the helmet rule.
Actually that would be coincidental.
Let’s wish an injury on a player that clearly makes the NFL better as a whole. Keeping it classy my dudes.
I’m sure the dude wasn’t asking for an career ending injury or even one that would cost Rodgers playing time. Hurt could mean a paper cut while counting his newly acquired riches.
Don’t want him to be injured, but GB will want some $$$ back after The Week 1 thumping the Bears put on the Packers. GB has no idea what the Bears are now capable of doing and will be playing catchup all night.
Go Bears !!
Says every bears fan every year until they are a 6 win team..you lost to packers with hundley at the controls last year. It won’t be close
You are a low-life dirt bag to wish an injury on any player! Karma is a real !
Is it fully guaranteed?
According to Spotrac the total package is worth $134M over 4 years with $103M guaranteed. Not sure why a player earning that much needs to receive a workout bonus of $500,000 but that was included too.
Because they use ARod being in Green Bay during the worst time of year up there (late winter/early spring) to encourage other players to agree to workout bonuses in their contracts. That way, they keep tabs on their players.
They’ve done things this way since 1992.
The interpretation of what constitutes a “workout” must be pretty loose because I seem to recall Rodgers being part of a celebrity golf tournament in California during the early off season.
Will he wait til he retires to say hes g a y is the ?
why? why does this matter? even if he does come out of the closet, you still got a snowball’s chance in hell
He’s banged that chick from sugarland, Olivia Munn, and now Danica Patrick. Women you’ve only jerked off to.
Why? Are you interested in dating him? Can’t you wait ?
Why do QBs suck out the cap money they can? People wonder why the Patriots are so good year and year out. And the focus is because Brady does not suck the organization out for all the many he can get.
You need to stop drinking the kool-aid about Brady being a white knight. Lets look at some figures to clarify the picture. For 2018 Brady will account for 12.21% of the Patriots salary cap. Now lets compare that to the numbers of those “greedy” QBs.
Derek Carr – 13.53%
Andrew Luck – 12.57%
Kirk Cousins – 12.57%
Aaron Rodgers – 11.54%
Alex Smith – 10.3
Matt Ryan – 9.93%
So the numbers reveal that most of the leagues veteran QBs use up about the same amount of team cap space with a few being above and below the 12% average.
Aaron Rodgers crying and bawling because others quarterbacks were making more money than he was…..so he had to make sure that he got more money. That just proves that he doesn’t give a shit about winning another Super Bowl. All he is worried about is making more money. If he really wanted to win another Super Bowl, he would be perfectly fine with the $20M or whatever he currently makes and make sure the Packers use that other money to bring in the players that they need to make their team as good as possible. Instead he gets to be the top paid quarterback and the Packers will be struggling to fill all the voids they have on their team in the coming years because they won’t have any salary cap space.
