The Giants and star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr are closing in on a five-year mega-extension, according to Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones of NFL.com (on Twitter). It’s a five-year extension worth up to $95MM with $65MM guaranteed overall, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
The value of Beckham’s new deal is $90MM over the five added years, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. That’s $18MM per year in new money – or $19MM/year, if counting the potential incentives. Either way, it’s the highest average annual value for any receiver in the NFL. Beckham also gets $41MM fully guaranteed at signing, plus another $24MM in injury guarantees for a total of $65MM in guarantees.
The deal is a big win for Beckham across the board, as he leads wide receivers in AAV, total guarantees, and full guarantees at signing. Previously, Antonio Brown‘s $17MM per year represented the annual standard for receivers, and Mike Evans‘ $55MM in total guarantees and $38.25MM in full guarantees were the statistical chart-toppers.
In terms of the average annual value on the “new money,” OBJ is now the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. He’ll also collect about $60MM within the first three years of the deal.
The two sides have wrestled over the extension for some time. Although OBJ is one of the most talented receivers in the game, he missed the majority of the 2017 season with injury and the Giants had concerns about his maturity. This offseason, Beckham flirted with the idea of a training camp holdout, but ultimately showed up for work and impressed team brass.
“I see what I expected to see when we started to communicate back in February,” Shurmur said in February. “This guy loves to play football, he trains extremely hard, he’s totally engaged in the meetings behind the scenes, the things that the world is not aware of, and he’s got a lot of passion for the game. We were just out in a walk-through and I saw three or four times when he was talking to different players about certain techniques within the play. That’s all good stuff.”
The 2014 first-round pick was limited to only four games last season and finished with just 25 receptions for 302 yards and three scores. However, he finished the previous three campaigns with at least 1,300 receiving yards.
At 25 (26 in November), Beckham is four years younger than Brown, and he’s outproduced the other members of his class on a per-year basis. The Giants paid a pretty penny to lock up the three-time Pro Bowler through 2023, but it will be worthwhile if he plays up to his ability.
Make it happen. Took him in fantasy this year
If OBJ got that much then Khalil Mack is going to ask for 22-23 mil per year. Ergo, Raiders will trade him.
Well if your going with that kind of logic I guess we will see the Rams trade Donald since he will be getting even more than Mack.
Raiders have Hurst, Key, Edwards, and Irvin manning the front line. Not great but pretty solid.
Apparently they’re willing to take the chance and may trade Mack for draft picks rather then shell out 100 mil+.
any guesses on how long it will be until he holds out because of someone getting paid more than him? I’m thinking 2 years
As soon as Eli hangs em up and he realizes they have no QB to get him his stats.
Manning is probably going on the trade block tomorrow…lol.
Overpay: he isn’t as good as AB
Debatable. AB has a much better QB throwing him the ball, and a dangerous run game they can’t just ignore
I would tend to agree, but being 4 years younger than Brown means they are paying for his prime years so it’s not too much of an overpay.
And before he starts seeing all that $$$ he won’t even have a quality QB to get the ballto him.
Yeah…he’s only got a 2 time SB Champion, MVP and future 1st ballot Hall of Famer throwing him the ball.
On his last leg with no heir apparent, and that extension starts next year when Cable TV Eli will be playing in his age 39 season.
Manning becomes a free agent in 2020 but with Beckham now signed the Giants would like to unload his contract and free up some cap space before then. No heir apparent as you say, but there is a backup on the Eagles who would probably look ok as a starter in New York.
And why would Philly deal a rival a QB? And don’t tell me McNabb to the ‘Skins…
Actually, I have a better one for you if you want to go for a ride in my time machine. November 19, 1978. New York. Final seconds of the game and Giants QB Joe Pisarcik gifts the Eagles a 19-17 win which became known as the infamous “Miracle in the Meadowlands”. Naturally, Joe became the most hated man in NY and was run out of town but the Eagles took pity on him and gave him a job. This of course had the conspiracy buffs wondering if maybe Joe didn’t intend to fumble that ball all along. Now we fast forward to the present and the Eagles send Mr. Foles (fresh from title glory) but still a backup QB to the Giants to finally dispel that long held belief that there was collusion involved in that historic match of rivals.
IF WR’s were really that valuable then why did the last 2 HoF inductee’s, TO & Moss, not have SB rings? It has always been the lines and QB play.
Moss didn’t win a SB with the pats? #DidntKnowThatThanksForDroppingSomeKnowledgeOnMeBuddy
He didn’t win a Super Bowl with the Pats.
Did you forget the helmet catch, that was a Giant. There’s knowledge.
Your assertion that a player has to have a ring as validation of his greatest is absurd. John Hannah was a 10x all pro guard and never got the ring. Dan Marino never got the ring.
Dan isn’t in the same conversation as Joe M, P Manning, or Brady. Rings mean something.
I believe he is with Peyton.
Joe Flacco has 2 rings and Marino none so according to your thinking then Flacco must be the superior QB…but to be honest, I don’t think may people would buy into that.
Huge mistake! Qb money for an injury prone head case receiver
Time to go celebrate on a boat with a bunch of men on South Beach…everyone take your shirts off and lets pose…LOL
I predict that this will be a huge mistake by the Giants, OBJ will not play up to this huge contract. He is a very talented head case who will make a Bone Head mistake off the field that will embarrass the team…. We lived through both TO and Dez here in Dallas….
i’ll take 15 starts this year, 1200 yards and 15tds. and all that attention on OBJ will leave a lot of yardage and scores for Barkely, Gallman, Shepard and Engram as well. Eli should be smiling most of 2018.
