The NFL salary cap is an extremely complex system to navigate. It’s unlike anything else in professional sports and it can cripple a franchise for years if it isn’t wise with its spending. Front offices have whole teams of executives who work to maneuver through cap issues.
It’s notoriously hard to construct a balanced roster while staying under the cap, so Bill Barnwell of ESPN took a stab at creating the perfect NFL roster while staying under the $177MM cap. He wisely went with quarterbacks still on their rookie deals, Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott, and had some other relative steals like David Johnson and Alvin Kamara. Overall, it’s a pretty fun read with an interesting set of rules, and definitely worth checking out.
Here’s more from around the league:
- The decision of whether or not to dismiss Colin Kaepernick‘s collusion claim against the NFL is currently being mulled over by an arbitrator, per ProFootballTalk.com. The NFL is hoping to avoid the case going to trial.
- Texans defensive end J.J. Watt says there is “no doubt” he’ll be ready for Week 1, according to Herbie Teope of NFL.com. His return will be a huge boost to the Texans’ injury plagued defense. Over the last two seasons, Watt has appeared in just eight games.
- Here’s a recent projection of the Eagles’ 53-man roster including a full breakdown of long-shots, bubble players, and potential trade candidates courtesy of Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com.
Can we please stop with the kap nonsense. No one is going to employ an anti American activist.
Exactly. No one wants to sign a backup QB that will come with a massive circus of attention
Yeah. Can we please institute fascism right now, and demand that you all filter your news so that the Russians amongst us feel comfortable reading your site again? Much obliged!
That would really be stopping fascism and I am all on board
kap is gay
And he needs a haircut
And a reality check
I’d rather have Kap as my backup QB, but only if he shuts up and plays.
There are teams that would gladly have him as their backup QB, or at least there were last year before he was out of football for a year. Unfortunately Kaep was only interested if he was paid starting QB money and had an opportunity to compete for the starters job. When a QB who couldn’t beat Blaine Gabbert out for a starting job starts making demands like that, plus brings a media circus with him; no one is going to take him up on that.
All of y’all are ignorant. He’s standing up for human rights. Only racists people think that way y’all do
Thats cool. But when he doesn’t have an NFL job anymore dont complain
But the complaint here is writing about him in regards to the NFL. We’re not allowed to talk about him, okay? Which must mean the NFL is innocent. Duh.
Why is it when someone doesn’t believe what you believe they’re racist? If you don’t believe what I believe, does that make you a racist?
I’m far from racist. My best friend is black. Grew up in a majority black town and have many mixed relatives. And all the people of color in my life think Kaep is a joke. He’s a poser. He has white parents. And he’s far from oppressed. He actually made himself oppressed by being a look at me look at my stance person. He conveniently started all this protest stuff the exact time he became irrelevant. When he was a big name in the sport was he oppressed? Did he have a stance against racial equality then? It’s all a cop out. No pun intended. He is trying to be relevant after his star stature was stripped by his awful performance. Yes I agree he would b one of the better back up QBs. But that’s what he is. A BACKUP. There’s been many 2-3 season stars who just fade out of the league. He’s just another cautionary tale of a guy who was ahead of the curve and had a nice couple season run. But opposing D Coordinators figured out his biggest weaknesses and exposed him.
People’s political awareness often grows over time. When Kaepernick came out of university and was just trying to get started as an NFL quarterback and there was no Black Lives Matter movement, of course he was only focused on football.
Black Lives Matter has opened a lot of people’s eyes to the systematic violence of American police towards black males. We’re not talking about beatings here. We’re talking about shooting unarmed men who are fleeing from either zero criminal activity or misdemeanours. This issue with police violence (police used to be trained to de-escalate and not shoot on right) in the US is totally out of control.
In a free country, there’s no reason Kaepernick and others should be prevented from speaking out against this systematic and lethal racism. None of this is to say that blacks should get a free pass to commit crime. It’s just saying that regularly shooting innocent black men (or those guilty of petty misdemeanours) is not okay.
Nor is regularly shooting/assaulting innocent law enforcement personnel just doing their jobs.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t. But just like in every other profession ur performance matters. And Kaep doesn’t perform. If he was playing well enough to be on a team he would be. Basically everyone who is supporting his “collusion” suit against his employer should also support the other players who did not perform well enough for to sign there second or third contracts with teams. Average NFL life span is like 3 years. What about the rest of the guys who were starters then flames out can they call collusion? He wasn’t the only one who participated in the protests and there are still players who r now. And they have jobs. Kaep is not that good. He’s not a starting NFL QB. End of story. That’s y he doesn’t have a job. Vince Young made a pro bowl and didn’t start many games into his second contract. Tebow won a couple playoff games and was the talk of ESPN etc and never started after that one year. And is out of the league as well. Do they all have collusion cases as well? There’s a time and place for social justice. I’m not against any movement for the fair treatment of our citizens black, white or brown. But, there a time and place for that.
Still needs a haircut and you and kap and the rest of the kneeling clowns are the ignorant ones
And he’s not standing up he’s kneeling down. If he was standing up we would t have this at uncle to begin with.

Hey “ y’all” we are the ignorant ones ! Man what has this world come to. What a shame.
FACT
If you don’t get what you want rather than accept you may not deserve it, cry racism. It apparently works.
Nothing says I’m A Macho Football Guy than whining about Kaep behind an anonymous handle on the internet. Good times!
Nothing says clueless like shouting racism every time a non Kap QB signs with a team or when the Pats signed Eric Dekker
Spot on! lol
You see words that don’t exist! Neat!
Roger Goodell might not want to see a trial for public relation reasons but you can be sure the NFL lawyers would be happy to drag this saga out as long as possible – padding their expense bill every chance they get.
